The 2010 Kentucky Derby takes place this Saturday, May 1st. The 136th running of the Kentucky Derby looks to be as wide open as bettors have seen in recent years. A series of scratches and last minute replacements will round out the field of nineteen colts and one filly. Post time for America’s favorite horse race is 5:00 PM (ET), with the threat of possible thunderstorms and a high of 75 degrees. Currently, Lookin at Lucky holds the favorite spot with odds of 3/1. California superstar Sidney’s Candy is just a stride behind at 5/1. But a cavalcade of hopefuls including Line of David, Stately Victor and American Lion can’t be counted out. Kentucky Derby fanatics need to take a close look at Nobles Promise who is second in graded stakes earnings only to the favorite and Super Size, who returns to Churchill Downs where he’s had success in the past. The one girl in the group, Devil May Care, holds a respectable 10/1 betting chance and the colt who could put his trainer in a historic seat as the first woman to win the Derby is Make Music for Me. He’s got a mountain to climb at 50/1 odds.
You can take all that into account and throw in the huge Churchill Downs crowds plus the guaranteed monumental television viewing audience and you’ve got one fantastic horse race. It all comes down to about two minutes past post time when only one horse comes home as this year’s possible triple crown champion. If the Kentucky Derby winner takes the Preakness two weeks later and the Belmont Stakes three weeks after that, he/she will be the first youngster to sweep the series in 32 years…stay tuned.
