Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees Betting Preview

One of the greatest rivalries in MLB history squares off Saturday as the Boston Red Sox (47-43) take on the New York Yankees (62-27). New York will host this one at Yankee Stadium, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:15 pm ET.

In an extra-inning affair, the Red Sox took the first game 5-4. Nathan Eovaldi struggled as he gave up three runs in 4.1 innings, but the bullpen dominated, allowing just one run in 6.2 innings.

Offensively, Boston hammered three home runs, including the 21st of the season for the third baseman Rafael Devers. J.D. Martinez, Xander Bogaerts, and Bobby Dalbec each had two hits in the win.

For New York, Jordan Montgomery went six innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four. Michael King took the loss after allowing an unearned run in the 11th.

DJ LeMahieu led the Yankees with three hits, while Giancarlo Stanton went two for five with three runs batted in and his 24th home run of the season.

The Yankees are the favorites in this one playing at home. They are -164 to win while the moneyline for the Red Sox sits at +138. The runline features Boston +1.5 (-138), and the over/under for total runs is 8.5.

Boston Tries To Secure Series Win

At 48-43, the Boston Red Sox sit third in the AL East, 14.5 games behind the New York Yankees. Still, as they have the sixth-best record in the American League, they would be in the playoff if they started today.

Trying to improve 25-23 on the road, Boston will also try to secure the series win over their rivals.

Taking the ball for the Red Sox Saturday will be righty Nick Pivetta. The 29-year-old is 8-6 in 18 games with a 4.08 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and has 100 strikeouts in 103.2 innings.

Pivetta has struggled in his last two starts. In nine combined innings, he has given up 13 runs on 16 hits. He will try to bounce back against the Yankees.

Rafael Devers continued his solid season on Friday with his home run. On the season, he is now hitting .326/.383/.600 with 21 home runs, 54 runs batted in, and 61 runs scored.

Against the Yankees’ Jameson Taillon, J.D. Martinez (.375 avg., HR, 2 RBI), Franchy Cordero (.333, HR, 2 RBI), and Christian Vazquez (.571, HR, 2 RBI) have all had some success.

Yankees Try To Break Slump

Despite having the best record in the majors still, the Yankees have been in a bit of a slump lately. They have lost two in a row and find themselves having lost five of their last six. On Saturday, they will look to get back on track at home, where they are 35-12 this season.

On the mound for Aaron Boone’s squad will be righty Jameson Taillon. In 17 games this season, he is 9-2 with a 4.01 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and has 77 strikeouts in 94.1 innings.

Like Pivetta, Taillon has struggled in his last two starts. In that span, he has allowed 11 runs on 13 hits over 10.1 innings.

There are several players who have had significant success against Nick Pivetta. Specifically, Giancarlo Stanton (.389, 3 HR, 5 RBI), Anthony Rizzo (.313, 2 HR, 8 RBI), and Josh Donaldson (.250, 3 HR, 7 RBI) have all hit the righty well.

The best hitter for New York continues to be All-Star Aaron Judge. In 332 at bats, he is hitting .274/.354/.596 with a team-leading 31 home runs, 66 runs batted in, and 69 runs scored.

Take Boston On The Runline

This one is a tough one to call. First, anytime these two match up, you can almost always throw records out the window as they consistently battle it out.

Also, the pitching on both sides have struggled a bit. This is a rematch for Nick Pivetta and Jameson Taillon of their last starts, and both struggled in that one giving up a combined 12 runs.

While the Yankees generally have the edge when it comes to a slugfest, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this one remain close, like it did on Friday. For that reason, take the Red Sox at +1.5 (-142) on the runline.
