Bryson DeChambeau U.S. Open Win Big for Bettors

Bryson DeChambeau rewarded loyal bettors as he won the 2020 U.S. Open as the only golfer to shoot under par for the weekend at Winged Foot GC in Mamaroneck, NY. DeChambeau shot a final round 67 to go to -6 for the tournament, outpacing Matthew Wolff by six strokes.

DeChambeau began the tournament as a +2500 favorite and even entered Sunday’s round at +225. Wolff was the +175 favorite entering the final 18 holes before his disastrous 75 to close out the weekend. Dustin Johnson was the 8:1 favorite entering the weekend, and ended up +5 which landed him in 6th place.

DeChabeau’s Oft-Lambasted Strategy Leads To Victory

DeChambeau hit just 23 out of 56 fairways on the weekend, which is an underrated number considering the difficulty of the course. After his win, Dechambeau told reporters, “I think I’m definitely changing the way people think of the game. Now whether you can do it, that’s a whole different situation. There’s a lot of people that are going to be hitting it far.”

DeChambeau’s off-season bulk up has been controversial. Many golf bettors feel that 27-year-old has sacrificed his short game for impressive drives off the tee. DeChambeau added about 40 pounds to his frame prior to this year’s first tournament and there have been some definite mixed results this season.

DeChambeau, a huge student of the game, must be doing something right though as he had a top five finish at the PGA Championship at at TPC Harding Park and won the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit over his last seven tournaments of the 2020 season.  DeChambeau moved from #9 to #5 in the world golf rankings after the win.

Other Betting Favorites Falter

Per usual, bettors had a large stake in Tiger Woods heading into the 2020 U.S. Open. Woods was searching for his 16th Major victory with a +3300 line but failed to make the cut with a 73 and a 77 on Thursday and Friday.

Phil Mickelson was also a sentimental play at +6600, as he looked to complete a career grand slam with a U.S. Open win. Mickelson was also back at Winged Foot GC where he had a bogey and double-bogey in two of the last three holes to lose the 2006 U.S. Open by a stroke to Geoff Ogilvy. Mickelson missed the cut with a 79 and 74 opening 36 holes.

Johnson had the 2nd best final round score (70) besides DeChambeau, but couldn’t overcome a 73 on Thursday. Jon Rahm (+1000) started the weekend off right with an opening round 69, but the world #2 was +9 total on Saturday and Sunday.

Patrick Reed (+3300) was the overnight leader heading into Saturday but he shot a disastrous 77 on holes 36-54 and was accused of cheating for trying to improve his lie on the 9th hole in the third round.

Where to Next for PGA?

The PGA will once again be in action this weekend as the tour heads to the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship. A lot of the big names in the sport will be sitting this one out a week after a major, as evidenced by Will Zalatoris being the early +1200 favorite. Graeme McDowell has value at +5000 after winning this event in 2019 and Mackenzie Hughes (+1600) will be a popular bet after finishing just a stroke off the lead here a year ago.
