Dallas Mavericks vs. Phoenix Suns Betting Preview

Western Conference foes will battle Thursday night as the Dallas Mavericks (25-24) take on the Phoenix Suns (25-24). The Suns will host this one at the Footprint Center, with tipoff scheduled for 10:00 pm ET.

Dallas comes into this one having lost back-to-back games including a 127-126 home loss against the Wizards on Tuesday. In the defeat, Luke Doncic had a game-high 41 points and 15 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for the Mavericks to pick up the win.

The Suns have been on a roll lately, having won four games in a row. On Tuesday, they blew out the Charlotte Hornets 128-97 at home. Cameron Johnson led all scorers with 24 points, while Dario Saric and Mikal Bridges combined for 37 points.

The Suns are the slight favorites playing at home. They are -120 to win, while the Mavericks’ moneyline sits at +102. The spread features Dallas as 1.5-point underdogs (-110), and the over/under for total points is 221.5 (-110).

Mavericks Look To Pick Up Road Win As Underdogs

At 25-24, the Mavericks sit 9.5 games back of first place in the Western Conference, While they are 18-11 against the West, they have struggled on the road with just an 8-15 record. Furthermore, they come in having lost seven of their last 10 games.

Offensively, Dallas ranks 21st overall, averaging just 112.9 points per game. Despite their low team numbers, they have an MVP candidate on their team in Luka Doncic.

In 44 games, Doncic is almost averaging a triple-double. In terms of points, he averages 33.8 points on 49.8% shooting. He is also putting up 9.1 rebounds and 8.6 assists per game.

Outside of Doncic, the other main contributors include Christian Wood (18.4 points, 8.4 rebounds), Spencer Dinwiddie (16.9 points, 5.3 assists), and Tim Hardaway Jr (13.9 points, 3.3 rebounds). Unfortunately for the Mavericks, Wood is out indefinitely as he deals with a thumb injury.

On the defensive side, the Mavericks rank 12th in the league, allowing opponents an average of 112.5 points per game (116.2 on the road).

Suns Look To Stay Hot

After an inconsistent start to the season, the Phoenix Suns have been red hot as of late. Not only have they won four in a row, but they are a solid 19-13 against the West and 18-7 at home. They will look to stay hot as they host a struggling Mavericks team.

Part of their success is thanks to an elite defense that ranks sixth in the NBA. They are allowing just 111.7 points per game overall and 108.7 per night at home.

On offense, Phoenix averages 113 points per game, good for 20th overall. With Devin Booker still out with a groin injury, Deandre Ayton has had to step up.

On the year, Ayton is averaging 17.5 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. He has struggled with an illness as of late, but he has been upgraded to probable for this matchup.

Mikal Bridges (16.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists), Cameron Johnson (14.1 points, 3.8 rebounds), and Chris Paul (13.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, 8.5 assists) have also had nice campaigns thus far.

Take Dallas And The Points

Despite their recent trends, there is a lot of value in taking Dallas in this one. Not only can Luka Doncic single-handedly take over a game, but they are playing a team that is extremely banged up despite their recent success.

Not only is Devin Booker out with an injury, but the Suns will also be missing Jae Crowder, Cameron Payne, and Landry Shamet in this one.

Getting Deandre Ayton back will be a big plus for the Suns, but it still wouldn’t be shocking to see the Mavericks keep this close throughout. Given that this might come down to just a possession or two, there is just too much value in taking Dallas and the points.

Take the Mavericks +1.5 (-110).
