Detroit Tigers Become First MLB Team to Partner with Bookmaker

On Thursday, the Detroit Tigers announced a multi-year deal with PointsBet. This deal is the first type of partnership between a Major League Baseball team and a sportsbook in the history of the sport.

PointsBet first originated down under in Australia and just made its way over to the states in January 2019. The company is mostly heralded on the basis of its unique points-betting method that allows bettors to make even more money than they might have on a regular bet. For each point that bettors win by, they can multiply their winnings.

Details of Tigers-PointsBet Deal

Starting with this season, PointsBet will have signs located at Comerica Park – home of the Tigers – and ads featured on the Detroit Tigers Radio Network, as well as twice per week on the team’s live streaming show, “The Word on Woodward.” PointsBet will also be integrated into The District Detroit app, which discusses the area around Comerica Park.

Financial terms of the deal were not available at this time.

“Our great fans will enjoy the unique experiences and innovative offerings that PointsBet’s personalized platform provides,” Chris Granger, a group president for Ilitch Holdings, the company that represents the Tigers, said in a release announcing the partnership. “As we usher in legal and responsible sports betting, we look forward to the fan-friendly enhancements that it will make to the game-day experience in and around Comerica Park.”

MLB Partnerships with Sportsbooks

Before this deal, PointsBet became one of the latest sportsbooks to become an Authorized Gaming Operator for MLB. PointsBet now has access to MLB’s official data feed and the right use of MLB marks and logos within sportsbook’s products. Another sportsbook operator, theScore Bet, announced a similar type of partnership with MLB on Tuesday.

“I view baseball as arguably the most disruptable sport when it comes to innovation around betting,” Johnny Aitken, CEO of PointsBet, told ESPN. “I think there’s a huge amount of innovation that can happen around baseball betting.”

Just last year, PointsBet’s debut year in the market, the sportsbook had betting odds on individual at-bats in MLB games. There were many different outcomes bettors could wager on like whether the player would hit a home run or strike out.

“Even if you join the broadcast in the seventh inning, and the Tigers are winning 6-0 over the Red Sox, there’s still an exciting way to place some action for the remainder of the game,” Aitken said.

Baseball Going Forward

The deal between sportsbook operators and professional leagues only enhances the betting experience for customers. Getting sportsbooks like PointsBet on board makes sure that fans and bettors alike stay tuned to the game in any way they can.

Of course, we’ll need to see if baseball – or any other professional sport, for that matter – will get back to normal any time soon. Professional leagues are doing their best to make these seasons either start or finish in a safe manner.

From here on out, it’ll just be a whole of preparing and praying to make sure everything goes off as planned.
