Gobert, Mitchell Test Positive for Coronavirus

The Utah Jazz are dealing with the coronavirus in a much different way than the rest of the sports world, as two of their main players have contracted the disease. Center Rudy Gobert was the first player in the National Basketball Association to test positive for the virus, and teammate Donovan Mitchell tested positive just a few hours later.

The initial test that revealed that Gobert had tested positive for the coronavirus forced the NBA to suspend the regular season indefinitely.

It is unclear when or how Gobert contracted the coronavirus, but his own actions did not help to keep him safe and healthy. The NBA issued a mandate to all media to stay at least six to eight feet away from the players, and interviews were conducted in a different setting than normal.

On Monday, Gobert made a point to touch all of the microphones and recording devices from the media at the conclusion of his media availability. Reports have also come in that Gobert was mocking the news of the coronavirus and was making jokes about contracting the virus to his teammates.

On Tuesday, Gobert started to feel symptoms of the disease, and the Jazz listed him as doubtful for Wednesday’s game. The center started feeling better on Wednesday, prompting the team to make him questionable for the game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Team health officials gave Gobert the test for the COVID-19 virus, and it was a positive result that was revealed right before game time. Gobert was not at Chesapeake Energy Arena for the game, but Jazz team doctors immediately informed game officials of the positive test.

The NBA removed both teams from the floor just seconds before tip-off, and the players were quarantined to the locker room. An announcement was made inside the arena for all fans to leave, and that the game was postponed. League doctors and other health officials conducted a fever test on the members of the Oklahoma City Thunder team before letting them go home for the night.

Advanced Testing

Testing for the Utah Jazz and their traveling party was a bit more advanced, and it took up to five hours to complete. The players were allowed to return to their hotel room to begin a 24-hour self-quarantine. On Thursday morning, the news came in that All-Star guard Mitchell tested positive for coronavirus as well.

Mitchell’s locker is right next to Gobert’s at home and on the road, and he is currently the only other player to test positive for the virus. Mitchell made an Instagram post on Thursday afternoon thanking the fans for the support.

It has been reported that Mitchell showed no symptoms of the disease and is expected to make a full recovery, as is Gobert.

The NBA is warning the five teams that have played against the Utah Jazz in the last 10 days to all go through the self-quarantine process. Those players are urged to report any symptoms to team doctors, but the NBA teams are hoping to get their players tested as well.
