How Many Super Bowls Will Kansas City Win?

The Kansas City Chiefs recently made Patrick Mahomes a wealthy man, agreeing to a new contract for 10 years and worth up to $503 million. Now one of the questions will become whether or not he is worth it. This likely won’t be answered until years from now, but fans are starting to wonder how many Super Bowls he could win.

He will have to separate himself from some former quarterbacks that have made this type of contract extension. Donovan McNabb also had a large contract extension, even signing it with the same head coach in Andy Reid.

That didn’t work out so well for the Philadelphia Eagles, who won zero Super Bowls with McNabb under center.

Michael Vick was another quarterback who signed a large contract extension and didn’t win a Super Bowl. He was a successful NFL quarterback but never got a ring.

One thing Mahomes has that they did not was a ring before the large contract. So how many more, if any, can he get?

The Over/Under

The over/under for this future bet for how many Super Bowls Mahomes can win with the Chiefs has been set at 2.5. This is set for the 12-year span that his current contract extends to.

This does not include the Super Bowl he won last season, so for the over to hit, he has to win another three rings. If he does that, it’ll put him in elite company.

It seems like an easy task when thinking about how dominant he has been for the last two seasons. However, continuing at that high pace is something many athletes have failed to accomplish.

Take a look at the past couple of success stories or champions. The Philadelphia Eagles couldn’t come close to what they accomplished after winning a Super Bowl. And fans loved the improvement of the Rams with Jared Goff, only for the team to flop after a Super Bowl appearance.

Staying consistent year in and year out is a hard task.

The Chiefs will also have to deal with the salary cap down the road. They won’t be able to afford to keep all of their top players down the line because of the money spent on Mahomes.

Player Comparisons

If there is one player that Mahomes wants to mimic would be Tom Brady and his success with the New England Patriots. He was able to win six Super Bowls with Bill Belichick in New England, but he never had that large of a contract.

Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana are two other quarterbacks that built winning ways by capturing four Super Bowl wins. But they also had the advantage of playing during an era that didn’t have a salary cap. Building a dynasty was easier to do.

What much of this comes down to is whether or not Mahomes can continue to make the players around him better. This includes the top talent he has now as well as young players who join the team.
