Impact Of George Floyd Death On Sports

A video of a police officer kneeling on an African American’s man’s neck went viral, shortly after the news came out that he had passed away. George Floyd of Minneapolis was killed by a police officer, who is now facing charges. This ignited the police brutality controversy that the country has seen before.
The big story years ago was Colin Kaepernick, who knelt during the national anthem in protest to the wrongful action taken by police against the African American community. Now, many other athletes are starting to speak out.
The former quarterback is voicing his support for the protestors. It is also reported that he will help financially support those who are wrongfully arrested during the protests.
“When civility leads to death, revolting is the only logical reaction. The cries for peace will rain down, and when they do, they will land on deaf ears, because your violence has brought this resistance. We have the right to fight back! Rest in Power George Floyd,” wrote Kaepernick.
Athletes Speaking Up
One star that has stepped out to be heard is Giannis Antetokounmpo. He tweeted on May 31 about the tragedy.
“I really don’t know how to put into words exactly how I feel, but one thing I know for sure is that enough is enough! It’s time for change! #GeorgeFloyd #AhmaudArbery,” Giannis’ tweet read.
Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves has been seen in the protests showing his support. This comes just weeks after he lost his mother to the coronavirus.
Tweets and public statements from players to coaches have been flooding social media. This support is not only coming from the African American community.
The recent No. 1 NFL draft pick took to Twitter to speak his mind.
“The black community needs our help. They have been unheard for far too long. Open your ears, listen, and speak. This isn’t politics. This is human rights,” Joe Burrow said.
One of the only sporting events going on right now is German soccer. The cause has made its way around the world and is receiving support from their athletes.
England forward Jadon Sancho scored a goal and went on to acknowledge the death of George Floyd in his celebration. He was wearing a shirt that read, “Justice for George Floyd” that he presented after his goal.
Several players and well-known sports fans have been seen participating in the protests. The Fayetteville protests had a New York Knick in the crowd.
Dennis Smith Jr., who was accompanied by famous rapper J. Cole, was amongst those protesting in Fayetteville.
Moving Forward
As sports return, there is sure to be more peaceful protesting from these athletes. As they have done before, “I Can’t Breathe” shirts will be prevalent as leagues begin play.
As football is about to start, it’s not known whether fans will be able to attend. But it will be interesting to see if players take after Kaepernick and begin to protest during the national anthem.
