Kansas City Chiefs at Miami Dolphins Betting Preview

The Kansas City Chiefs will look to officially clinch the AFC West in Week 14 when they visit the Miami Dolphins Sunday at 11:00 p.m. EST. The Chiefs are currently listed as 7-point road favorites with an over/under of 49.5 points.

The defending Super Bowl champs are undoubtedly one of the favorites to win another Super Bowl. The Chiefs have rattled off seven straight wins since their only loss of the season to improve to 11-1. One more win or Las Vegas Raiders loss will officially clinch the AFC West for Kansas City. Plus, with the Pittsburgh Steelers losing last week, the Chiefs are now tied with Pittsburgh for the coveted top seed in the AFC, so motivation shouldn’t be an issue heading down the stretch.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins are quietly one of the hottest teams in the NFL, winning seven of their last eight games. Miami’s problem is they still trail the Buffalo Bills by a game at the top of the AFC East standings. They also have a slim hold on one of the AFC’s Wild Card spots, so this is a critical game for the Dolphins, especially with such a challenging schedule during the final four weeks of the season.

Tua’s Time

It didn’t result in many points, but Tua Tagovailoa played his best game as a pro last week after missing the previous week due to a thumb injury. The lefty threw for 296 yards while completing 67% of his passes, albeit against the Cincinnati Bengals defense. Tagovailoa is slowly becoming more comfortable, and the Dolphins are figuring out how to best utilize the rookie quarterback. That being said, the Miami offense is anything but explosive, especially without much of a rushing attack.

Of course, facing the Kansas City defense could be what the Miami offense needs to get going. Before limiting the Denver Broncos to just 16 points last week, the Chiefs had given up an average of nearly 29 points in their previous three games. Obviously, that’s usually not a problem because the Chiefs have such a potent offense. But the Kansas City defense has taken a step back from earlier in the season.

A Little Off?

You know you have a great offense when failing to score 30 points in back-to-back weeks is a big deal. That’s what has happened to the Chiefs, who struggled in the red zone against Denver last week. The previous week, the Chiefs racked up 543 yards against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but only managed 27 points. There’s no reason to sound the alarm, but one would expect the Chiefs to execute better moving forward.

Keep in mind the Dolphins have one of the best defenses in the NFL. While Miami has played some weaker teams in recent weeks, the Dolphins have held seven of their last eight opponents to 21 points or less. On the season, Miami is allowing just 17.7 points per game, so if there’s any team out there that could slow down Patrick Mahomes and company, it might be the Dolphins.

Fish Fight

While the Chiefs have won seven in a row, they’ve won four in a row by six points or less. Given Miami’s defensive prowess and the way Tagovailoa played last week, the Dolphins are more than capable of forcing the Chiefs into another close game. Bet on the Dolphins to beat the 7-point spread.
