Sunday Night Football features a battle of AFC and NFC West as the Los Angeles Chargers (5-3) take on the San Francisco 49ers (4-4). The 49ers will host this one at Levi Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 8:20 pm ET.
Last week, the Chargers were able to just squeak by the Atlanta Falcons 20-17 on the road. In the win, Justin Herbert threw for 245 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Austin Ekeler had both a rushing and a receiving touchdown.
After two straight losses, the 49ers bounced back in their last game with a 31-14 win over the Rams. Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. Christian McCaffrey rushed for a touchdown and threw for one too.
The 49ers are heavy favorites in this one playing at home. They are -335 to win, while the Chargers’ moneyline sits at +270. The spread features Los Angeles +7.5 (-110), and the over/under for total points is 45.5.
Chargers Offense Tries To Get Back On Track
Expected to have one of the strongest offenses in the AFC this year, the Chargers come into Sunday’s game ranked 13th, averaging 23 points per game. With both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams out again Sunday, quarterback Justin Herbert will have to find other options to get the offense going.
Speaking of Herbert, he has thrown for 2,254 yards, 13 touchdowns, and five interceptions this season.
The focal point of the offense right now is actually running back Austin Ekeler. He has rushed 98 times for 427 yards and six touchdowns. With Williams and Allen out, he is also the leading receiver with 60 catches for 381 yards and another four scores.
Defensively, the Chargers have been one of the worst in the league. They currently rank 30th overall in scoring defense, allowing opponents an average of 25.8 points per game.
Rested 49ers Look For Home Win
Despite being just 4-4, the 49ers only sit a couple of games out of first place in the NFC West. Coming off of their bye week, San Francisco hopes that their extra rest and preparation can pay off Sunday night.
The extra week might also give Christian McCaffrey a bit more comfort in the offense. Through the first two games, he has rushed 26 times for 132 yards and a touchdown. Expect him to become a focal point in the offense moving forward.
The extra rest also helped Deebo Samuel. The superstar wide receiver is probable for Sunday’s contest after dealing with a hamstring injury. He has 32 receptions for 387 yards and two scores in seven games. He has also rushed 24 times for 138 yards and another touchdown.
Under center is Jimmy Garoppolo. He has thrown for 1,691 yards, 11 touchdowns, and four interceptions in seven games.
San Francisco ranks in the top 10 in defense. They are sixth in scoring defense, allowing just 18.4 points per game (20 at home).
Take San Francisco To Win And Cover
Looking at the trends, this seems like a game you would want to bet on Los Angeles. After all, they are 5-0 in their last five games against the 49ers, and they are 4-1 against the spread over that time too.
There are just too many signs pointing towards San Francisco, though. They are coming off of a bye week, they are healthier, they are playing at home, and they have a better defense.
Right now, San Francisco has the better tools to put up points, and they have the far superior tools to keep points off the board for the other team.
Take San Francisco to not only win this one but take them to cover the -7.5 point spread as well.
