Los Angeles Rams at Arizona Cardinals Betting Preview

There will be massive implications in the NFC West on Sunday when the Los Angeles Rams take on the Arizona Cardinals. The Rams are considered 3-point favorites with the over/under set at 48.5 points on the road.

For the first time this year, the Cardinals are reeling, losers of three of their last four games. In fact, they are one Hail Murray away from a four-game losing streak. However, they are just two games behind Seattle at the top of the NFC West and still holding onto the final wild-card spot in the NFC. Nevertheless, Arizona needs to get back on track quickly despite playing a manageable schedule in December.

As for the Rams, they are coming off a disappointing loss last week that has temporarily derailed their division title hopes. L.A. followed up back-to-back wins over the Seahawks and Buccaneers with a loss to the 49ers. On the bright side, the Rams are comfortable in one of the NFC’s wild-card spots and just one game behind the Seahawks for the NFC West’s top spot.

Goff’s Follies

On paper, Jared Goff is having a fine season, although nowhere near what he did two years ago. Things have fallen off the rails over the last month, with Goff throwing six interceptions in his previous four games. With the talent around him, Goff should be doing more to limit his mistakes. The Rams are around the top-10 in both passing and rushing, but they are middle of the pack in points because they are turning it over too frequently and not finishing enough drives in the end zone.

The Rams’ hope is they can turn that around this week against an Arizona defense that’s been up and down this season. While the Cardinals held a lackluster New England offense to less than 200 yards last week, they still lost the game. Before that, the Cardinals were giving up 31.5 points per game over their previous four games, so they’ve struggled against quality offensive teams with better or average quarterbacks.

A Little Slump?

It’s possible that Kyler Murray finds himself in the midst of a slump over the last few weeks. Teams are starting to blitz Murray more, expositing a mediocre Arizona offensive line and preventing Murray from taking shots down the field. It may not be a coincidence that Arizona’s two lowest point totals of the season have come in the last two weeks. The key for the Cardinals could be establishing Kenyan Drake on the ground so that teams have to respect Arizona’s rushing attack a little more.

Of course, the Los Angeles defense is more than capable of putting pressure on quarterbacks without a lot of blitzing. The Rams are averaging over three sacks per game, with Aaron Donald rushing from the inside and Leonard Floyd on the outside. The L.A. defense is also giving up less than 20 points per game on the season, making them a good candidate to give Murray and the Arizona offense trouble.

Toss-Up

Both teams are capable of being explosive offensively. However, we’ve also seen both teams struggle a little in recent weeks and make mistakes. This game could easily go either way, meaning the best bet is on the home underdog, the Cardinals.
