Mayfield Works Out With Browns Teammates In Texas

We are not even sure if there’s going to be a 2020 NFL season just yet. However, quarterback Baker Mayfield isn’t taking anything to chance.

This week, the former Heisman Trophy winner invited a few of his wide receivers and tight ends from the Cleveland Browns to work out down in his hometown of Austin, Texas. Among the names to show up were wide receivers Rashard Higgins and Damion Ratley and tight ends David Njoku and Austin Hooper. Of course, noticeably absent were wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry – both of whom are still rehabbing offseason surgeries.

It was actually the new free-agent signing Hooper who initiated the gathering for the workout. Hooper said he told his new quarterback that he’d like to work out in Austin, so Mayfield took it a step further and invited even more pass catchers to join in.

“We’re going to lay out some things we want him to get better at. We’re going to tell him some things he’s really good at and double down on those, and we hope he takes a step forward like the rest of our players,” Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said of Mayfield in an interview with ESPN Cleveland on April 28.

“I think we added some pieces to the offensive side of the ball, which can only help the development of a young quarterback. We’re gonna work our hardest with this kid. We’re gonna keep our thumb on him.”

New Man In Charge

The Browns have yet another coaching change to account for this season. Freddie Kitchens wasn’t particularly effective last season roaming the sidelines in Cleveland and was let go after only 16 games to show his stuff as a head coach.

It is Stefanski up next to finally try and lead this Browns team to the playoffs. He is now the 11th head coach in Cleveland since 2000. The job is a tough one, but Stefanski is probably the one guy that can inspire some hope in this group.

“It’s just a matter of the players rising to the occasion,” Stefanski said. “I think Baker has done that throughout his lifetime. He’s won in high school. He’s won in college, and he’s won some games in the NFL.

“I have a lot of confidence in Baker, but I’m not going to speak it into existence, and neither will he. It’s going to be a matter of hard work from Baker, from our coaches, and from our entire offense.”

According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Browns currently have +3400 odds to win the Super Bowl. Perhaps, Mayfield and the boys getting a leg up in the offseason could put some incredible value on that number.

If that doesn’t work for you, the Browns have +1700 odds to win the AFC title and +480 odds to win the AFC North division title. Additionally, Cleveland has an 8.5-win total (+100 over/-120 under), +116 odds to make the playoffs, and -142 odds to miss them.

One thing is for certain – the Browns will be very entertaining. And we’ll certainly be there to watch it.
