Milwaukee Brewers at Houston Astros Betting Pick

The Houston Astros will be looking for a quick, two-game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night. At home, the Astros won the series opener on Tuesday 10-8 and are -125 favorites to win on Wednesday as well.

Despite Tuesday’s loss, the Brewers remain on top of the NL Central. The Brew Crew is clinging to a half-game lead over the Cubs in what is becoming a crowded and competitive division. Prior to Tuesday’s loss in Houston, the Brewers had actually won four in a row, so they’ll be looking to quickly get back on the winning side of things.

As for Houston, Wednesday’s win moved them one ahead of the Dodgers for the most wins in baseball. Since the calendar flipped to June, Houston is 8-2 and showing no signs of slowing down. The Astros currently hold a nine-game lead for the top spot in the AL West.

King of the Hill

Justin Verlander will get the start for Houston on Wednesday. The 36-year-old has been as good as ever this season, going 9-2 with a 2.31 ERA over his first 14 starts of 2019. He was slightly off in his last outing, allowing three runs over 6 1/3 innings against the Mariners. However, that’s about as bad as it’s gotten for Verlander this season. Even when he doesn’t dominate, he’ll do enough to keep the Astros in the game.

To be fair, Milwaukee’s lineup has some heavy hitters. Christian Yelich appears determined to win back-to-back MVP honors. He’s hitting .346 with an OPS of 1.209 and is hitting .565 with three home runs over the past week. Mike Moustakas and Yasmani Grandal are nearly as hot, so the Brewers will throw some tough left-handed hitters at Verlander on Wednesday.

Bringing the Wood

The Brewers will hope that Brandon Woodruff can match Verlander’s performance. Woodruff has been Milwaukee’s savior in the rotation for most of the season, going 8-1 with a 3.87 ERA over his 13 starts. He was almost un-hittable in May, posting a 1.36 ERA over his five starts. However, Woodruff has struggled a little over his last two starts, giving up nine runs in 10 innings, all against the Pirates.

The silver lining for Woodruff is that he’ll be facing a somewhat watered-down Houston lineup. The Astros are currently without Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, and George Springer, who are all on the IL. However, you wouldn’t be able to tell by the 10 runs the Astros scored on Tuesday. The likes of Josh Reddick, Alex Bregman, Michael Brantley, and Yuli Gurriel still give the Astros a formidable lineup. They’ve also added one of their top prospects in Yordan Alvarez. All he’s done is hit two home runs in his first six at-bats in the majors.

Not Worth It

The Astros are usually a safe betting pick, even against a fellow division leader. The fact that Verlander is starting makes it even more difficult to go against the Astros. With a money line of -125, it’s not worthwhile to take a chance on the underdog. Bet on the Astros to win on Wednesday.
