MLB News: MLB Win Total Betting

Now that the 2020 Major League Baseball schedule has been released, sportsbooks have posted their team-by-team win totals. If you are not familiar with betting in this manner, you simply bet the over/under of each team.

Keep in mind that these totals will fluctuate between sportsbooks and by state.

National League East

Team/Total

  • Atlanta Braves/33.5
  • Washington Nationals/33.5
  • New York Mets/32.5
  • Philadelphia Phillies/31.5
  • Miami Marlins/24.5

Nothing really jumps off the board as a huge over. The only bets I like are the Mets under 32.5 and the Marlins 24.5. Miami is severely undermanned in this division and will be going up against the AL East. I find it hard to believe they will win over 22 games.

The Mets just don’t have the talent of the other three teams. I think their total is inflated due to a lot of people voting for a big city team.

National League Central

Team/Total

  • Chicago Cubs/32.5
  • St. Louis Cardinals/32.5
  • Cincinnati Reds/31.5
  • Milwaukee Brewers/30.5
  • Pittsburgh Pirates/25.5

This Cubs number seems high. With Jose Quintana out for a while, the pitching depth is lacking. Tyler Chatwood and Alec Mills are going to have to go to the mound two out of every five days, and with an aging Jon Lester on the downside of his career, this seems like a team that should go under 32.5.

I also have some money on the Pirates under 25.5. They are far and away the worst team in this division. All of the other four could win the division, so it could be a long season in Pittsburgh, even if it is only 60 games.

National League West

Team/Total

  • Los Angeles Dodgers/37.5
  • Arizona Diamondbacks/31.5
  • San Diego Padres/30.5
  • Colorado Rockies/26.5
  • San Francisco Giants/25.5

While the Dodgers are heavy favorites to win the NL West, 37.5 is a lot of wins. That is the equivalent of winning around 102 games in a full season. I see them with the division in hand late in the year and resting some guys and going under the 37.5.

I also like the Giants to go under 25.5. The AL West and NL West have some quality teams, and I don’t see the Giants being favored in very many games.

American League East

Team/Total

  • New York Yankees/37.5
  • Tampa Bay Rays/33.5
  • Boston Red Sox/31.5
  • Toronto Blue Jays/27.5
  • Baltimore Orioles/20.5

Poor Baltimore! An over/under of 20.5 is so pathetic, but they are awful. Not sure I can bet under 20.5, though.

The Yankees, like the Dodgers, are big favorites, but 37.5 is a huge number. I like the under for the same reason I played the Dodgers under.

American League Central

Team/Total

  • Minnesota Twins/34.5
  • Cleveland Indians/32.5
  • Chicago White Sox/31.5
  • Kansas City Royals/23.5
  • Detroit Tigers/21.5

The only two plays I have in this group are under 32.5 and 34.5 for Indians and Twins, respectively. I think the Twins win the division, but their NL counterparts are tough, and they can’t just feast on Kansas City and Detroit.

American League West

Team/Total

  • Houston Astros/35.5
  • Oakland Athletics/33.5
  • Texas Rangers/28.5
  • Seattle Mariners/24.5
  • Los Angeles Angels/Not Posted

With the uncertainty of whether Mike Trout will be playing or not, a lot of sportsbooks have refused to post a number on the Angels. I like under 33.5 for the Athletics, especially if Trout plays. I am not touching the Astros’ number with a 10-foot pole.
