NBA Team Executives Calling For Season To Be Canceled

The current NBA season is still suspended due to the coronavirus, but many players still want to see the season through. However, every day that inches closer to the 2020-21 season, the odds of finishing the season drop.

When next season begins, there is still going to have to be safety measures in place. The impact of COVID-19 will not be gone before late fall/early winter.

Some team executives are starting to sweat because of the lack of information they are being given about the current status of the infectious disease. The recent plan to allow players to return to practice sites is an example of the league office not corresponding with team executives.

But the league is still looking at ways to resume play.

“It is the responsibility of the league office to explore all options for a return to play this season,” the spokesperson told CNBC in a statement. “We owe that to our fans, teams, players, partners, and all who love the game.

“While our top priority remains everyone’s health and well being, we continue to evaluate all options to finish this season. At the same time, we are intensely focused on addressing the potential impact of COVID-19 on the 2020-21 season.”

No Guarantees

Many people are saying that there is no exact way to guarantee safety for these players. The risk to return may be larger than the reward. There are so many questions still to be answered if they decided to resume play, such as players’ and coaches’ contracts.

One player agent talked with CNBC and was surprised that NBA commissioner Adam Silver had not canceled the season. He, along with others, feel like they are dragging out the inevitable.

Executives want the TV money, and they notice that cancellations continue to burn a hole in their pocket. Many models have been introduced to copy the WWE in Florida, potentially having an NBA tournament in a central location or playing in a “protective bubble” environment.

Experts have tried to forecast when things can get back to normal, including sports, but those dates continue to be moved backward.

One NFL spokesperson told CNBC the difficulty of starting the NFL season if the NBA didn’t even get to finish.

“How can we start if (the NBA) didn’t get to finish their sport? The NBA finishing their season would be a positive for all sports getting back to work.”

There are players in the NBA that won’t be thrilled about the decision to forego the remainder of the season. Especially those who are in place to compete for a championship.

LeBron James weighed in on Twitter: “Saw some reports about execs and agents wanting to cancel season??? That’s absolutely not true. Nobody I know saying anything like that. As soon as it’s safe we would like to finish our season. I’m ready and our team is ready. Nobody should be canceling anything.”

It seems that players are in the same dark as every sports fan in the country. There is hope for continuation, but suspended seasons are becoming at risk of being canceled.
