NCAA Football News and Notes: SEC Opening Soon?

Like the NFL, NCAA college football was fortunate in the fact that the shutdown did not largely impact the sport as its season was already done. Despite that, a lot of uncertainty remains.
Schools around the country are up in the air as to whether college kids can even return to school in the fall, and without on-campus school, there would likely be no football. Some colleges, especially some in California, have already declared that they will not be returning for the fall semester.
Regardless, players, coaches, and fans alike are all hopeful that a return is possible. Let’s take a look at some of the news stories from around the country from this last week.
Could SEC Really Open Facilities In June?
According to SEC athletic directors, there is a vote that is scheduled for May 22 that may allow players to come back to school to work out and prepare for the upcoming season by June 1.
Apparently, they may not be the only one as most conferences have athletic facilities closed for the month with uncertainties about when to open it back up. Not all are anxious about opening, though.
Lincoln Riley, the head coach at the University of Oklahoma, hopes that the vote is one of reason as he thinks it is best to wait. Riley, like the rest of us, hopes and thinks football can be played this fall, but he doesn’t want to rush it simply for the sake of a few extra workouts.
Rutgers Gets Quarterback From Nebraska
Rutgers has not been particularly good on the offensive side in recent years, but coach Greg Schiano is hoping that a new transfer can help that. Noah Vedral, who has been Nebraska’s quarterback, has decided to transfer to Rutgers.
Vedral will be a graduate transfer, meaning that he will be able to play immediately and still has two seasons of eligibility left. This is not the first time that Vedral has transferred as he also transferred from UCF to Nebraska in 2018.
While Vedral did not get a ton of playing time for Nebraska last year, he does have some experience. Last season he went 34 for 52 for 418 yards. He may not be a clear-cut day one starter for Rutgers, but he certainly will bring competition to the position.
It has been interesting to see Schiano’s work since taking over a team that has been abysmal as of late (3-21 over their last two seasons). He has now brought in nine transfers, and Schiano is hoping to get a spark in the program from the onset.
Evans Chooses TCU
The No. 1 prep running back in the country (according to Rivals.com) and No. 13 player overall has finally found a home, as Zachary Evans has elected to play for the TCU Horned Frogs.
Evans is from Houston and originally was linked to teams ranging from Texas to LSU had signed a letter of intent with Georgia. However, Georgia released him from his commitment, and he was back on the search.
Ultimately, the decision allows Evans to be close to home as he pursues his collegiate career. Granted, there are still a lot of questions as to whether a season will even happen, but if it does, TCU should have a gamechanger in their backfield. In his senior season of high school, Evans rushed for 20 touchdowns and over 1,500 yards.
