New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox Betting Preview

It’s rivalry weekend at Fenway Park as the New York Yankees come to town to kick off a four-game set against the Boston Red Sox. New York is starting to run away with the AL East, already building up a 14-game lead over Tampa Bay thanks to a 59-23 record that is the best in the MLB.

Boston has turned their season around, going 20-6 during June, but have struggled a bit with the calendar flipping and are just 2-4 in July. The Sox are a +142 underdog (NYY -168) as they try to snap a streak of eight losses in the last ten games against the Yankees.

New York Hopes They Saved Some Offense

The Yankees could only manage a two-game split in a visit to Pittsburgh, but Wednesday’s series wrap-up was an impressive one with a 16-0 victory. Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton chipped in to hit two of New York’s six home runs as they improved to 7-3 over their last ten games.

Even more impressive about the season-high 22 hits on Wednesday is the fact that Anthony Rizzo (22 HR, 52 RBI) was out of the lineup with a strained back. He is listed as questionable to play Thursday night.

Gerrit Cole (7-2, 2.99 ERA) would take some of that run support that the Yankees put up against his former team on Wednesday, but then again, the right-hander usually doesn’t need it. Cole has held opponents to two ER or less in six of his last seven starts.

Boston Tries to Win a Series

After an absolutely torrid June, the Red Sox are limping a bit as of late. They wound down last month, dropping two of three at Toronto, then lost two of three against the Cubs in a historic series at Wrigley Field, and just wrapped up winning only one of three against Tampa Bay.

Boston will try to get back on track, but their pitching is struggling in allowing 15 total runs to the Rays in the last two games. New York also has the #1 scoring offense in baseball (5.13 runs/game).

Josh Winckowski (3-2, 3.12 ERA) will make the sixth start of his MLB career a day after Brayan Bello lasted 4.0 IP allowing 4 ER in his big league debut. Winckowski has allowed just five total runs in his last four starts, and most importantly, when facing a team like the Yankees, he hasn’t given up a home run over that span.

Yankees vs. Red Sox Pick and Prediction

The Yankees have been pretty dominant in the head-to-head matchup over the last ten games, but they did also just suffer back-to-back losses to the Guardians and Pirates, where they scored only two runs.

Winckowski has been quietly pretty solid for the Red Sox in his rookie campaign, and Cole is Cole for the Yankees. That means the best way to approach this game is on the total, one that should be under the listed 8.5 number.

Pick: Under 8.5
