New York Yankees at Seattle Mariners Betting Preview
If the season ended today, both the New York Yankees (70-39) and the Seattle Mariners (59-51) would be in the postseason. On Monday, these two will square off at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, with the first pitch scheduled for 10:10 pm ET.
For the Yankees, they hold the top spot in the American League; however, they lead the Astros for the best record by just a half-game. For Seattle, they currently hold the third Wild Card spot.
It was a dreadful weekend for the Yankees as they dropped all three intraleague games to the St. Louis Cardinals. Despite getting nine runs on 16 hits Sunday, they dropped the finale 12-9.
Seattle had a slightly better weekend than New York. While they didn’t win their series, they did manage to split their four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels by taking Sunday’s finale 6-3. The big blow in the game came in the third inning as Jesse Winker hit a grand slam, his 11th home run of the season.
The Yankees are the favorites on Monday despite playing on the road. They are -122 to win while the Mariners’ moneyline sits at +104. The runline features Seattle +1.5 (-162), and the over/under for total runs is 7.5.
Yankees Look To Regroup
This weekend certainly did not go the way the Yankees envisioned. It was the first time that a NL team had swept a three-game series from the Yankees in 15 years and the first time that the Cardinals have ever done so. Still, with the best record in the AL and a comfortable lead in the AL East, the Yankees will look to regroup starting Monday.
On the mound for Aaron Boone’s squad will be righty Jameson Taillon. In 21 games this season, he is 10-2 with a 3.96 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and has 98 strikeouts in 113.2 innings of work.
Taillon is hoping for a better outing than his last. Despite getting a no-decision, he gave up five runs to the Mariners in just 4.2 innings of work. His biggest issue was the four walks he gave up in the contest.
Offensively, the Yankees will hope to get to the Mariners’ Logan Gilbert as they did in his last start. In their careers, Josh Donaldson, Anthony Rizzo, and Jose Trevino have all homered off the righty.
The Yankees’ best hitter continues to be Aaron Judge. In 399 at bats, Judge is hitting .301/.389/.669 with a team-leading 43 home runs, 97 runs batted in, and 91 runs scored. The favorite to win the AL MVP at -420, he also sits second on the team in stolen bases with 11.
Mariners Looking For Breathing Room
At 59-51, the Mariners are going to have a hard time catching the Houston Astros in the division as they currently trail by 11 games. Still, the Mariners would love to create some separation in the Wild Card.
They sit in third by mere percentage points to the Tampa Bay Rays. With the Guardians just two games behind them, though, Seattle will look to string together some wins this week and hope to catch the Yankees in the midst of a slump.
Taking the ball Monday will be 25-year-old righty Logan Gilbert. In 22 games, he is 10-4 with a 3.09 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and has 120 strikeouts in 128.1 innings.
As previously mentioned, Gilbert was roughed up in his last start as he gave up six runs on seven hits in just 5.1 innings to the Yankees. He also struggled with walks in his last start as he gave up four free bases.
Keep an eye on Eugenio Suarez in this one. Despite hitting just .233 in 30 at bats versus Taillon, he has three home runs and nine runs batted in. Cal Raleigh and Jesse Winker have also taken Taillon deep.
Take Seattle On The Runline
This is a rematch of an August 2 matchup between the two teams as Jameson Taillon and Logan Gilbert square off again. Neither pitcher performed too well as they combined to give up 11 earned runs, but the Mariners ended up winning the first contest 8-6.
Looking at the trends, the Yankees have struggled, going 1-6 in their last seven road games; however, in their last six at T-Mobile Park, they are 5-1.
With how familiar these two teams are with one another and the pitching, it wouldn’t be shocking for either team to take Monday’s game. For that reason, taking the runline could be the best play.
In this case, that means taking Seattle +1.5 (-162).
