NFL Draft Kicks Off Virtually

Round one of the NFL Draft was Thursday. Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL staff had to operate a little differently with the CDC guidelines. The whole draft was done virtually with all of the players and coaches at their own homes.

One of the funniest additions to the draft was a screen positioned behind Goodell as he read off the picks. The screen was made up of dozens of cameras that played fans at home cheering on their team. He was even playing to the “crowd” as he read off the selections.

First Round

To no surprise, former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow went first overall to the Cincinnati Bengals. Many scouts believe he has the talent to be successful at the next level.

He put on a show his last season with Coach Ed Orgeron and the rest of the Tigers. Fans will have an eye on him immediately as he tries to turn around the Bengals franchise.

The second pick was all but finished before the draft as well. The Washington Redskins selected edge rusher Chase Young. Young played college for Ohio State, where he displayed high-level athleticism at the defensive end position.

After Burrow, the question was where the other top-rated quarterbacks were going to go. Tua Tagovailoa from Alabama had a lot of questions about his health and size. However, he still went No. 5 overall in the first round to the Miami Dolphins.

The other highly rated quarterback was Justin Herbert out of Oregon. He could’ve entered the draft last year but decided to play another year with the Ducks. He was selected just after Tua going sixth overall to the Los Angeles Chargers.

The other quarterback taken off the board in the first round was a pick that has plenty of fans questioning the decision. Jordan Love from Utah State was selected 26th overall by the Green Bay Packers.

There’s no doubt that Aaron Rodgers is trying to win now and would’ve loved that selection to be a playmaker. However, the Packers made the same decision they did when selecting him to sit behind Brett Favre. Love’s time will come, but he will be watching for a while as long as Rodgers stays healthy.

One of Mel Kiper’s “no no’s” would be taking a running back in the first round. That happened with the very last pick at 32nd overall. The Kansas City Chiefs selected Clyde Edwards-Helaire from LSU.

If you are going to take a running back early, it might as well be from an SEC powerhouse. The Chiefs also have Patrick Mahomes in the backfield, so it seems they had some slack to take this risk.

Remaining Picks

The rest of the draft will take place throughout the weekend, continuing with the same virtual format. One of the best things about the draft is seeing these athletes’ emotions and excitement after carrying out their dreams of playing in the NFL.

That is the one positive takeaway from these players being at home with their families.

Teams will try to put themselves in the best position possible entering the 2020 season, whenever it can begin.
