NFL Free Agency: Foles Sent To Chicago

Wednesday marked the official start of free agency for the upcoming 2020 NFL season. Following a crazy day on Tuesday full of unexpected signings, Wednesday was relatively quiet.

The big news was that Chicago had agreed to a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars that sends Nick Foles to Chicago in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick. Chicago had initially expressed interest in Teddy Bridgewater, who ended up signing with the Carolina Panthers on a three-year $63 million deal instead.

The acquisition of Foles feels awfully rushed to me, but Matt Nagy and the Bears had to grab someone before it was too late. The whole idea was to bring somebody in that can challenge, motivate, and compete against Mitch Trubisky at the quarterback position and hopefully push him over the hump.

Sources close to the organization say the entire team is still behind Trubisky and wants him to be the starter, but if Trubisky plays like he did last year, Foles will take over in no time.

The Jaguars acquired a fourth-round draft pick in the trade with the Bears and announced Wednesday that Gardner Minshew is officially the starter. In 2019, Minshew threw for 21 touchdowns passes and just six interceptions as a rookie.

Heading Back

Malcolm Jenkins is returning to the New Orleans Saints on a four-year deal worth $35 million. Jenkins took to Twitter on Wednesday to post a thank you message to the Eagles that said, “I can only say, I’m grateful to Mr. (Jeffrey) Lurie for the opportunity to represent this city. I thank my teammates for making me better every single day. I thank the warriors in this community that fight for a better Philadelphia. And I thank the fanbase for embracing me as your own.”

Jenkins began his career in New Orleans in 2009 but signed a deal with Philadelphia in 2014 since the Saints did not offer him an extension or new contract.

Other Moves

Leonard Floyd signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams worth $10 million after being released by the Bears. Floyd finished 2019 with a very underwhelming three sacks and 40 total tackles on the season.

Devon Kennard and the Cardinals agreed to a three-year deal worth $20 million. Kennard collected nine sacks and 58 total tackles for the Lions in 2019.

Eli Apple is headed to the Las Vegas Raiders after not being offered an extension from the Saints. Apple made 53 solo tackles in 2019 and forced one fumble.

The Los Angeles Chargers announced they will not be signing another quarterback and are moving forward with Tyrod Taylor as the starter.

Andy Dalton was rumored to be headed to Chicago a couple of times the past few weeks as well and was offered as the favorite to land in Chicago on most sportsbooks. Dalton is still awaiting offers from any team, as are Cam Newton and Jameis Winston.

It will be interesting to see how everything will play out as the drama that is NFL free agency continues despite the coronavirus.
