NFL News and Notes: Brawl Fallout Continues

Week 12 is upon us, and as every week passes, games become more and more important for those seeking a playoff berth. As teams jockey for positions for both their divisions and their playoff livelihoods, a few games this week are of particular interest.

Games like the Dallas Cowboys versus the New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers versus San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens versus Los Angeles Rams all highlight a fantastic week 12. Aside from the games to be played, here is some other news from around the league this week:

Garrett Suspension Upheld; Rudolph Fined

It has been quite a week for Myles Garrett and the Cleveland Browns. The star defensive end made headlines for all the wrong reasons last week as Garrett and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph got in a fight that ended with Garrett using Rudolph’s own helmet to hit the quarterback over the head.

The league has suspended the defensive end indefinitely. Garrett and his camp appealed the suspension (most notably the indefinitely part), but it was to no avail as the suspension was upheld.

On a separate, and also concerning note, Garrett has asserted that Rudolph used racial slurs towards the defensive end, which was part of the reason for the violent reaction. While this has been denied by Rudolph, the Browns and the league, it is an assertion that Garrett continues to hold firm with.

While violence, especially using a weapon, is not tolerable, the league definitely needs to take Garrett’s accusations serious as the use of racial slurs should be equally not tolerated, assuming that they actually happened. Rudolph was not suspended for his part of the brawl but was fined $50,000.

Davis To IR

Vernon Davis has had quite a career, as he is currently in his 14th season in the NFL. With that being said, it looks increasing likely that this might be his last. The Washington Redskins tight end, according to ESPN’s John Keim, has been placed on the injured list as a result of a concussion that Davis received back in September.

Reed is currently in the last year of a three-year deal with the Redskins. In four games this season, Davis had 10 receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown. Davis has spent time with San Francisco, Denver, and Washington.

His most productive season was probably back in 2009 when he had 128 receptions for 965 yards and 13 touchdowns. If this is indeed the end of the road for Davis, it has been one heck of a ride.

Vander Esch To Miss Time

Any time that a player is dealing with a neck injury, it certainly should give pause to the player’s team. When it is something that he has a history with, it is even more imperative to treat it carefully. That appears to be the case with the Dallas Cowboys Leighton Vander Esch.

The star linebacker is set to miss some time, according to Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, as he is likely to have an MRI in a few weeks. This season, Vander Esch has 72 tackles, one tackle for loss and a half-sack. Vander Esch was a Pro Bowler in 2018, and the Cowboys hope that he will be able to bounce back after a short time off.

Brady On The Injured Report

New England Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady has been listed as questionable this week as his team is set to host the Dallas Cowboys. Brady has had some issues with his throwing elbow, and apparently, it hampered him at some point this week. Brady is still expected to suit up, but for someone on the wrong side of 40, it is certainly something to keep an eye on moving forward for the Patriots.

Thus far this season, Brady has thrown for 2,752 yards in 10 games with 14 touchdowns and five interceptions. The Patriots come into this week 9-1 and will look to extend that against the Cowboys.

While Brady is expected to play, one person he won’t be throwing to is Antonio Brown. Rumors had spread earlier this week that Brown, who had posted an apology to the Patriots and owner Robert Kraft, might be re-signed by the New England Patriots.

However, Jeff Howe of The Athletic has reported that won’t be happening. As it stands, Brown is still being investigated by the league, and he won’t be able to suit up for any team until the investigation is done and any subsequent punishments have been served.

Trubisky Good To Go

Despite being pulled from last week’s game due to a hip pointer, it appears that Mitchell Trubisky is good to go for Sunday’s matchup with the New York Giants. It has been a tumultuous week for Trubisky and the Bears as they have had to answer questions about whether the quarterback was actually injured or was simply benched.

It has been a rough season not only for the quarterback but the Bears as a whole. After winning the NFC North last season, they had aspirations of a deep playoff run, but it appears that dream is all but dead. The Bears sit at 4-6 and are third in the NFC North (a division that hosts two eight-win teams).

Needless to say, it has also been a rough season for Trubisky. This year, he has thrown for 1,580 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions in nine games. In year three of his career, it is fair to start hearing whispers of Trubisky being a bust, and certainly Bears fans are wondering how the team could have passed on players like Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson in favor of Trubisky (who they actually moved up in the draft to get).

Still, at this point, the Bears can’t change the past, but they will have significant questions to address about the future.
