NFL News and Notes: Broncos Deal For Bouye

While the first part of the offseason sort of shakes out slowly in the NFL world, it is about to pick up. With the new league year about to get underway on March 18, free agency and the draft will see teams trying to improve their teams with the goal of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy next season.

Still, action has still been busy around the league as the combine has seen scouts examining potential talents for the draft, and teams are making decisions on their own player personnel. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the news from around the league this last week:

Broncos Trade For Cornerback

John Elway certainly made some waves on Tuesday when it comes to his offseason plans. The Denver Broncos have traded for star cornerback A.J. Bouye from the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a 2020 fourth-round pick.

While the trade won’t become official until the new league year kicks off in a couple of weeks, it is a good way for Elway to start in shaping his roster for the upcoming season.

Last season, for Jacksonville, Bouye had 65 tackles and one interception. At 28 years old, the Broncos are hoping that he can continue his solid play for the Broncos. This also means that Chris Harris will likely be hitting the open market as the former Broncos cornerback is set to become a free agent this offseason.

Series Of Franchise Tags

As players look for ways to retain their star players, it is the time of the offseason where players are hit with the franchise tag for teams to avoid losing their stars without giving out big contracts. This offseason is no different and here is a list of players that are expected to be tagged this offseason:

  • DT Chris Jones (Chiefs): The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to give the franchise tag to their star defensive tackle. Last season, at 25 years old, Jones had 36 tackles, including nine sacks and 20 quarterback hits. He also had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
  • OL Brandon Scherff (Redskins): The Washington Redskins appear likely to hit guard Brandon Scherff with the franchise tag, which would likely carry about a $15 million tag with it. The former Pro-Bowler had his season cut short last year due to injury, but when healthy, he is one of the best in the game.
  • LB Bud Dupree (Steelers): The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to hit linebacker Bud Dupree with the franchise tag, which will cost the team around $16 million. Last season, Dupree had 68 tackles, 11.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. Despite not having a whole lot of cap space, the Steelers will do everything they can to tie him up.
  • WR A.J. Green (Bengals): Expected to likely take Joe Burrow with the top overall pick in the draft, the Bengals are certainly making sure that he has someone to throw to. The Bengals are going to put the franchise tag on their star wide receiver A.J. Green.
Unfortunately, last season was a lost season as he has not played since the 2018 season due to an ankle injury. Still, when healthy, he can be as good as it gets. In 2017, his last full season, Green had 75 receptions for 1,078 yards and eight touchdowns.
  • DE Yannick Ngakoue (Jaguars): It is also expected that the Jacksonville Jaguars will tag defensive end Yannick Ngakoue. This one could get interesting as Ngakoue has recently expressed a desire to get out of Jacksonville.
In theory, this could be a situation where the organization decides to tag him only to trade him afterward. Last season, Ngakoue played in 15 games accruing 41 tackles, eight sacks, four forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and one interception.

Could The Vikings Extend Cousins?

According to Ben Goessling of the Star Tribune, it is expected that the Minnesota Vikings will likely look to extend quarterback Kirk Cousins. Cousins is entering the last year of a three-year deal and will make just under $30 million this upcoming season.

Last season, Cousins went 10-5 during the regular season, throwing for 3,603 yards, 26 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. While he has constantly been criticized for not being a quarterback that can lead a team to a championship, Cousins has shown flashes of brilliance over his career.

With quarterback play being a position that is constantly in flux, the Vikings may feel the most comfortable trying to tie up Cousins long term.

Giants Exercise Tanney’s Contract

For the first time in over a decade, there won’t be a Manning on the Giants quarterback depth chart this season. With that in mind, the Giants solidified that depth chart a bit this week when they exercised Alex Tanney’s contract.

With Daniel Jones expected to be the starter, Tanney will serve as his backup. For Tanney, at 33, he has long been a journeyman that has not logged a lot of playing time. In fact, he has technically just thrown 15 passes in his career.

Last season, he threw just one pass (a completion) in one game for one yard. Still, it is expected that he would be able to hold his own in a backup role, and, at just a little under a million dollars, he isn’t very expensive either.
