NFL News and Notes: Dalton Signs With Dallas

Action remains hot and heavy in the NFL as teams evaluate where they are after the draft has concluded and try to plug the holes of areas that haven’t been addressed. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the news from around the league from this week:

Dalton Not A Free Agent For Long

After being released by the Cincinnati Bengals, it did not take quarterback Andy Dalton long to find a new team. However, while he has a new team, he also has a new role.

Dalton is signing a one-year deal worth $3 million (plus incentives) with the Dallas Cowboys to be the backup to quarterback Dak Prescott. For Dalton, it is a guaranteed contract on a team that should be competitive while the Cowboys get a suitable backup in case Dak Prescott were to get injured.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, this is not seen as a future replacement to Prescott, who the Cowboys are still working to sign long-term; rather, it is just a viable option to keep the team rolling if he were to get injured.

Last season, with the Bengals, Dalton went 2-11 in 13 games after throwing for 3,494 yards, 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He obviously became expendable for the Bengals when they drafted Joe Burrow No. 1 overall in the draft.

Bears Making Moves

Since the conclusion of the draft, the Chicago Bears have made some notable decisions, especially with their quarterback. The Bears have declined their fifth-year option on Mitchell Trubisky, possibly marking the end of a very questionable draft pick by general manager Ryan Pace.

This means that Trubisky will enter the last year of his rookie contract and will likely be fighting for a starting role after the Bears also traded for quarterback Nick Foles. Last season, Trubisky threw for 3,138 yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while going 8-7 in 15 games.

Trubisky wasn’t the only news recently for the Bears, though, as they brought in a couple of interesting free agents to plug some of their holes after the draft. The Bears agreed to one-year deals with both safety Tashaun Gipson (formerly of the Texans) and wide receiver Ted Ginn (formerly of the Saints).

Gipson will fill the vacant safety position opened by the departure of Ha-Ha Clinton Dix. Last season, Gipson had 51 tackles and three interceptions (including one for a touchdown) in 14 games with the Texans.

Ginn provides either Foles or Trubisky with a deep threat in the passing game. While already 35 years old, Ginn has shown he can still be productive. Last year, with the Saints, he had 30 receptions for 421 yards and two scores.

Chiefs Sign Charlton

After being waived by the Miami Dolphins, Taco Charlton has found a new home. The 25-year-old defensive end is signing with the reigning champs, the Kansas City Chiefs.

Last year, with the Dolphins, Charlton played in 10 games (five starts) and compiled 21 tackles, five sacks and two forced fumbles. For the Chiefs, they are hoping that he can build off of this year and help their defensive front.

Dolphins Trade Harris

In what has been a very busy offseason for the Dolphins, Miami has traded defensive end Charles Harris to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for a 2021 7th-round pick.

Harris, a former first-round choice, has disappointed in his first few years with the Dolphins. Last year, he had just 23 tackles and 0.5 sacks. He hopes to revitalize his career in Atlanta, and at just 25, the Falcons hope they can catch lightning in a bottle.

Jaguars Sign Running Back Thompson

The Jacksonville Jaguars have brought in running back Chris Thompson as a complement to Leonard Fournette. Last year, with the Redskins, he had 37 rushes for 138 yards and 42 receptions for 378 yards.

It will ultimately be interesting to see how the running back dynamic works in Jacksonville. The Jaguars just recently declined their fifth-year option on Fournette and even tried to trade him ahead of the draft. As it stands now, though, Fournette will be the feature back with Thompson as his backup.
