NFL News and Notes for December 21

It was an ugly week for the NFL as COVID-19 played havoc on teams and schedules around the league. Significant players in the game have been placed on the COVID-19 list, including Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce, Browns’ defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, Chargers’ linebacker Joey Bosa, and others.

With several games getting postponed until Monday and Tuesday, teams were left scrambling to fill rosters and will also feel the crunch of short weeks in Week 16.

The league and player’s union agreed to adjust the testing protocols, including only testing those that are fully vaccinated if they are symptomatic.

With so much focus on the effects of the COVID outbreak, let’s take a look at some of the other big stories in the NFL this week.

Buccaneers Suffer Significant Loss

While the Buccaneers suffered an embarrassing 9-0 defeat at the hands of the New Orleans Saints, that may not have even been the biggest loss for them.

During the game, star wide receiver Chris Godwin suffered a knee injury. On Monday, the team announced that the injury was actually a torn ACL. As a result, Godwin’s season is over.

Godwin was having a fantastic season this year prior to the injury. In 14 games, the 25-year-old had 98 receptions for 1,103 yards and five touchdowns.

If that wasn’t bad enough, wide receiver Mike Evans and running back Leonard Fournette are also dealing with injuries, although their hamstring issues are not expected to keep them out for the rest of the season.

The defending champs have the third-best odds of winning it all again this year. They are +650 to win Super Bowl LVI.

Giants Lose Quarterback, Wide Receiver

Godwin isn’t the only one done for the year. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Monday that the New York Giants are sitting quarterback Daniel Jones for the rest of the year. Jones has not played since Week 12 when he suffered a neck injury.

The third-year quarterback played in 11 games this season, throwing for 2,428 yards, ten touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also rushed 62 times for 298 yards and another couple scores.

At 4-10, the Giants sit dead last in the NFC East and have been mathematically eliminated from the playoff hunt. As a result, it makes sense that the Giants would not want to risk any potential further injury.

New York has also lost wide receiver Sterling Shepard to injury. Shephard has suffered a torn Achilles, according to the Giants.

Shephard has battled injuries throughout the year and has played in just seven games. In that time, he has 36 receptions for 366 yards and a touchdown.

Bridgewater Suffers Injury

Adding one more injury to the list is Denver Broncos’ quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. In their loss to Cincinnati this week, Bridgewater suffered a head injury.

Having already suffered a concussion in Week 4, this is obviously scary for the 29-year-old quarterback.

This season, in 14 games, Bridgewater threw for 3,052 yards, 18 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also rushed for another 106 yards and two touchdowns.

At 7-7, the Broncos sit last in the AFC West. Due to the Wild Card, though, the Broncos have technically not been eliminated from postseason contention.

Still, they are just +28000 to win Super Bowl LVI this year.

Eagles Guaranteed To Get First-Round Pick From Colts

In the trade that sent Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts, the Eagles were guaranteed a second-round pick. However, if Wentz played in 75% of the Colts snaps this year, that second would become a first.

On Sunday, in the Colts’ 27-17 win over the Patriots, that 75% was surpassed.

Both of these teams are still in playoff contention, but the Colts sit in a better spot. At 8-6, they are +1900 to win the Super Bowl this season. The Eagles are +10000.

Still, this is a deal that both sides are probably content with as the Colts are competing for a playoff spot and the Eagles haul in another first-round pick.
