NFL News and Notes: Rodgers’ Finish Not In Green Bay?

While sports remain at a standstill, the NFL has been at a somewhat advantageous position as their season has not been affected to date by the coronavirus pandemic. Despite its avoidance of any issues, some may be on the way as the upcoming season starts to approach.

Still, there is optimism amongst the league that a season can proceed on schedule (albeit probably without fans to start), but the league has certainly kept its eye on what adjustments might have to be made if things don’t shake out the way they want.

While much of the attention may be on how the upcoming season will play out, there is still plenty of news from around the league. Let’s take a look at some of the news form the last week.

Rodgers In Anything Other Than Green?

When the 2020 NFL Draft started, Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay Packers’ fans were hoping that he would be surrounded by talent. Instead, the Packers traded up to pick his possible replacement, Jordan Love.

Talking with Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com, Rodgers said that he was thrilled with the pick mostly because he says he has a lot left in the tank and wants to play into his forties. He also said, “And so my sincere desire to start and finish with the same organization … may not be a reality at this point.”

It is mind-boggling to think of Rodgers on a different team, but that very well may be the case if the Packers move onto Love. Even though he has dealt with injuries at times, Rodgers is still elite.

Last season, Rodgers went 353 for 569 for 4,002 yards, 26 touchdowns, and just four interceptions. He also rushed 46 times for 183 yards and another score. At 36 years old, his best days are likely behind him, but the former first-round pick in 2005 still has a lot to give, it just seems that it is a matter of time before that is with another team.

Is Gurley Still Injured?

After being abruptly cut by the Los Angeles Rams, Todd Gurley quickly agreed to a one-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons. The problem, though, is that he has still not taken his physical months later.

For full disclosure, players have not been able to take physicals during the pandemic, but there is still some uncertainty about the actual health status of Gurley. He has dealt with knee injuries for the last couple of years, and no one is positive that he will be 100% healthy.

Last season, with the Rams, Gurley rushed 223 times for 857 yards and 12 scores. He also had 31 receptions for 207 yards. Still, at 3.8 average rushing yards per carry and 6.7 average receiving yards per reception, that is a far cry from his 2017 stats where he averaged 4.7 and 12.3, respectively.

Saints Add Montgomery

As if the New Orleans Saints’ offense didn’t have enough weapons, they added one more to the mix. The Saints announced that they have signed veteran running back Ty Montgomery to add to their running back / wide receiving core.

Montgomery, who is still only 27, has been a versatile piece for a lot of teams. His best year was with the Green Bay Packers in 2016 when he rushed 77 times for 457 yards and three touchdowns while also adding 44 catches for 348 yards.

In the last few seasons, he has bounced around between Green Bay, Baltimore, and the New York Jets, mostly being used as a reserve or change of pace-type player. The same will probably be true in New Orleans with Alvin Kamara and Latavious Murray in the backfield.

However, if anyone can get the most out of his skills and elusiveness in the backfield, it is Drew Brees and Sean Payton.
