NFL News: Former NFL Receiver Killed in His Home

Former Chargers, Patriots, and Redskins wide receiver Reche Caldwell was shot and killed in his Tampa home over the weekend. He was 41 years old. According to authorities, “The incident does not appear to be a random act.”
Caldwell played in the NFL for six seasons after being drafted in the second round in 2001. He starred at the University of Florida before turning pro following his junior season in Gainesville.
He played for the Chargers for five seasons, but his best season as a pro came during his one season in New England in 2006 when he had 102 targets and 61 receptions for 760 yards and four touchdowns. Those numbers led a Patriots team that went on to the AFC Championship game.
Adrian Peterson Plans to Take a Knee
In a statement made to the media over the weekend, Washington Redskins running back said that he “without a doubt” will be taking a knee before NFL games in the upcoming season, along with many other players. The veteran also said that he expects many other players around the league to join him.
The act was first used by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick back in 2016 and was met with some hostility and outrage. The silent protest was meant to draw attention to police brutality in regards to the way authorities police the black community. Kaepernick is currently out of the NFL and working as a spokesman for Nike.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement released Friday that National Football League was wrong in the way that they handled the protests around the league in recent years, and they now encourage all players to speak out and peacefully protest.
Clowney reportedly turned down massive deals
Free-agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has reportedly turned down a 1yr-$18M offer from the Cleveland Browns and a 1yr-$15M offer to remain with the Seattle Seahawks. Those numbers came from a Mike Florio interview and was reported by Yardbarker.
The three-time pro bowl defensive end is looking for a multi-year contract and was once seeking around $20M per season. While Clowney is undoubtedly a big name, and a solid defensive end, the market does not seem to agree that his demands are the same as his actual value. In six seasons as a pro, he as recorded just 32 sacks and eight forced fumbles and has never recorded double-digit sacks in a season.
In a previous article written for this site, we speculated that Clowney could be a great fit with the Cleveland Browns opposite promising start Myles Garrett. Apparently, the Browns thought the same but were not able to draw him in with the one year offer. It will be interesting to see who blinks first.
This is not the first time in recent memory that NFL stars have held out looking for a payday. LeVeon Bell sat out the entire 2018 NFL season looking for a new contract, and Melvin Gordon sat out four games last season in the same attempt.
