Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs Florida State Seminoles Betting Preview

After a weekend full of compelling college football, get one final fix Sunday night as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish take on the Florida State Seminoles. The Seminoles will host this one at Doak Campbell Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 pm ET.

Last season, Notre Dame finished 10-2 overall, but they lost their final two games of the season against Clemson and Alabama. Trying to get back in the win column, head coach Chip Kelly will look to take down the Seminoles on the road.

Speaking of Florida State, they finished last season a disappointing 3-6. Now entering his second season as head coach, Mike Norvell will look for signs of improvement with a roster that still has a lot of work to do.

Notre Dame is the favorite in this one despite playing on the road. They are -280 to win while the Seminoles’ moneyline sits at +220. The spread features Florida State +6.5 (-104), and the over/under for total points is 55.5.

By The Numbers

Last season, Notre Dame was the stronger of the two teams on offense. They ranked 27th in scoring, averaging 33.4 points per game (29.3 on the road). The Seminoles ranked 93rd, averaging 23.9 points (29.2 at home).

Defensively, it was again the Fighting Irish with the advantage. They ranked 14th in scoring defense, allowing 19.7 points per game. Florida State ranked 111th allowing 37.5 points per game (30 at home).

Notre Dame is 5-0 straight up in their last five road games, and they are 16-2 in their last 18 games overall.

Florida State is 3-9 against the spread in their last 12 games and 2-6 against the spread in their last eight games as underdogs.

Notre Dame Out To Show They Are Still One Of The Best

For the last several years, the Fighting Irish have shown that they are one of the best teams in the country, but there has also been a separation between them and the absolute top tier. Last year, in the semifinals of the College Football Playoff, the Irish lost to the eventual national champions, the Alabama Crimson Tide, 31-14.

This season, the expectations are still high, but there is also plenty of work to do, especially losing a strong starting core. In fact, they have lost nine starters on the offensive side, including quarterback Ian Book.

In his place, the Fighting Irish will turn to Jack Coan under center. Coan is a transfer from Wisconsin. In 2019, his last full season as a starter, he threw for 2,727 yards with 18 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Who Will Start At QB For Seminoles?

One of the toughest decisions that Mike Norvell has this season is who will be under center. In fact, we probably won’t know a definitive answer until gametime.

On the one hand, you have the sentimental favorite in McKenzie Milton. In 2018, playing for UCF, Milton suffered a season-ending and career-defining leg injury. That year, he had thrown for 2,663 yards, 25 touchdowns, and just six interceptions in 10 games before the injury. His next time under center will be his first since that injury.

On the other hand, you have Jordan Travis, a quarterback who has been in the system and is a factor with both his arm and legs. Last season, he threw for 1,056 yards, six touchdowns, and six interceptions in eight games. He also rushed for 569 yards and seven touchdowns in that same span.

Take Notre Dame To Win And Cover

Yes, Notre Dame has had a lot of turnover from last year’s playoff team. Still, they are going against a Florida State team that has a lot of work to do to solidify their roster.

When the lines first came out, Notre Dame was a double-digit favorite. Now down to 6.5 points, this is a good time to jump on them not only winning but covering the spread as well.

Take Notre Dame to win and cover the 6.5 points.
