Oklahoma Sooners at Baylor Bears Betting Preview

Tuesday night features a battle of Big 12 powerhouses as the Oklahoma Sooners (11-2, 1-0 in Big 12) take on the No. 1 Baylor Bears (13-0, 1-0 in Big 12). Baylor will host this one at the Ferrell Center, with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 pm ET.

Since losing to Butler on December 7, the Oklahoma Sooners have strung together four straight victories, including a 71-69 win over Kansas State on New Year’s Day.

In the win, guards Elijah Harkless and Umoja Gibson led the way with a combined 40 points and ten rebounds.

Baylor has dominated to start the season. Not only are they undefeated, but they have beaten three teams currently in the top-25, including No. 19 Villanova (57-36), No. 10 Michigan State (75-58), and No. 11 Iowa State (77-72).

Their win over Iowa State occurred on New Year’s Day. Baylor had four players score in double digits in the win, including a team-leading 16 by James Akinjo.

Baylor is the overwhelming favorite in this one. They are -1100 to win while the Sooners’ moneyline sits at +680. The spread features Oklahoma +13 (-110), and the over/under for total points is 138.5 (-110).

More Odds

Baylor is tied with Kansas as the favorite to win the Big 12 at +170. The Sooners are +2700 to win the conference.

In terms of winning the National Championship, Baylor has the second-best odds at +1000. The Sooners are +13000 to win it all.

By The Numbers

The Bears have had one of the best offenses in the nation this season. They rank ninth overall averaging 83.2 points per game (88.5 at home). The Sooners rank 82nd averaging 74.5 points per game (77.8 on the road).

Defensively, it is again Baylor with the advantage. They rank 10th in the nation in scoring defense allowing opponents an average of 58 points per game. Oklahoma ranks 22nd, allowing 60.1 points.

Oklahoma Looks For Major Road Win

To this point, Oklahoma doesn’t have any signature wins on the season, but they do have a couple of tough losses against Utah State and Butler. Trying to make a name for themselves in the national rankings, a win over Baylor, especially on the road, would be huge.

Leading the way for Oklahoma is senior forward Tanner Groves. In 12 games, he is averaging 14.3 points, six rebounds, and two assists per game.

Unfortunately, Groves had to miss the game against Kansas State due to COVID-19 and is questionable for Tuesday’s game. Junior forward Jacob Groves and freshman guard Bijan Cortes are in the same boat.

The other two double-digit scorers for the Sooners are guards Umoja Gibson and Elijah Harkless. Gibson is averaging 12.6 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.3 steals. Not to be outdone, Harkless has averaged 10.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.1 steals.

Other contributors include Jordan Goldwire (9.9 points, 4.3 assists, 1.6 steals) and Jalen Hill (9.2 points, 6.2 rebounds).

Baylor Hopes To Stay Perfect Overall

As the No. 1 overall seed, the Bears understand that they have a target on their backs. Trying to stay perfect overall and in the conference, they will look to avoid the upset against Oklahoma Tuesday.

Baylor has four players averaging double digits, but they are led by guards LJ Cryer and James Akinjo. Cryer is averaging 13.5 points on 51.4% shooting. For Akinjo, he is putting up 13 points a game along with 2.3 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 2.2 steals.

The other two double-digit scorers are Kendall Brown (12.3 points, 3.9 rebounds) and Adam Flagler (10.7 points, 2.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.3 steals).

The Bears have four others averaging 5.6 points or more in Matthew Mayer (9.2 points, 4.6 rebounds), Jeremy Sochan (8.6 points, 6.5 rebounds), Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua (8.6 points, eight rebounds), and Flo Thamba (5.6 points, 4.5 rebounds).

Take Baylor To Win And Cover At Home

Unfortunately for Oklahoma, they are just outmatched in this one. Even with Tanner Groves in the lineup, the Bears are just too deep and talented for the Sooners to keep up. Without Groves, this one could get out of hand quickly.

Regardless, take Baylor to both win and cover at home, where they are currently 7-0.
