Patrick Mahomes Agrees to $450 Million Extension

The Kansas City Chiefs want to keep their Super Bowl MVP for the foreseeable future. To do so, they have offered him a 10-year deal worth $450 million.

This will guarantee that he will be tied to Kansas City until at least the 2031 season. The injury guarantee on the contract was $140 million.

This will make Mahomes have the largest contract in all of professional sports. This deal trumps the one made to Mike Trout by the Los Angeles Angels back in March of 2019. However, 100% of Trout’s is guaranteed.

Mahomes will make $477.6 million over the next 12 seasons. Many people saw this large extension coming for him, especially after the Super Bowl win. But some were expecting it to be after this next season.

But they decided to go ahead and make sure a deal could be done. Mahomes is a highlight reel on the field and is a proven winner. At only 24, he is the first player ever to win a Super Bowl and an MVP before the age of 25.

Mahomes now has a contract with a team that is five years longer than any other player in the NFL. The closest deal to his is Ezekiel Elliot, who has ties to the Dallas Cowboys until 2026.

Here are some other notable extensions in the history of the NFL.

  • Donovan McNabb, 12 years with Eagles, 2002
  • Brett Favre, “lifetime” contract with Packers, 2001
  • Drew Bledsoe, 10 years with Patriots, 2001
  • Michael Vick, 10 years with the Falcons, 2004

Mahomes joins elite company with his 10-year extension. Mahomes was a large part of the 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV.

The Kansas City Chiefs ended up doing well by selecting the quarterback from Texas Tech. The Chiefs traded up to grab him with the 10th pick of the 2017 draft. He sat out most of his rookie season behind veteran Alex Smith, but quickly made an impact.

He was named the NFL MVP in 2018 after a remarkable season. He had 50 touchdown passes and threw for 5,097 yards in his first full season as a starter.

“Obviously, I want to be in Kansas City for a long time with the organization that we have and the team that we have,” Mahomes said earlier this offseason.

“I’ve always been a believer that if you treat people the right way and you do things the right way, that stuff kind of handles itself. I know that Kansas City will hopefully do right by me, and I’ll do right by them of just going out there and handling myself on the field, and that that contract stuff will get done and I’m able to play in Kansas City for a long time”.

The Chiefs may have some issues down the road with paying support players behind Mahomes, but for now, they got their guy. He will be a popular name in the NFL for years to come.
