San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers Betting Preview

Even though the San Diego Padres made the biggest splash of any team in MLB at the trade deadline, the Los Angeles Dodgers have proven they are still the elite of the NL West as they aim for a weekend sweep in Sunday night’s series finale.

Los Angeles has been a -150 or better favorite in each of the first two games and are still listed at -136 in a pitching matchup between Yu Darvish and Tyler Anderson. Can San Diego salvage one game Sunday night as +116 underdogs?

Padres’ New Look Offense Unimpressive

San Diego fans got kind of spoiled when Juan Soto, Josh Bell, and Brandon Drury made their team debuts on Wednesday en route to a 9-1 win over the Rockies at Petco Park. We thought that was going to be the norm at the plate, but the Padres are 0-3 and have scored just seven total runs since then.

Soto is 5-14 and has also drawn two BBs since joining San Diego, but Bell is just 1-7 in the Dodgers series. Drury has been a bright spot with six RBI since joining the club, including a grand slam on his first pitch, but it’s only translated to a 1-3 record.

Darvish (10-4, 3.30) makes his second start of August, coming off three ER allowed over 6.0 IP against Colorado, but he was also pitching with a huge lead as the Padres went on to win 13-5. Darvish is 0-1 with a 3.75 ERA in two starts vs. Los Angeles this season.

Dodgers Dialed In

San Diego brought in some reinforcements at the trade deadline, but L.A. has proven they didn’t need to as the top scoring offense in baseball (5.30 runs/game). The Dodgers have tallied an 8-1 and an 8-3 victory so far this weekend as their win streak has reached seven games.

Catcher Will Smith has had a nice weekend, going 5-6 with a HR with four RBI and four runs scored. Mookie Betts is 5-9 with four runs scored as well, but it’s Freddie Freeman who could have a big outing on Sunday night baseball as he is 6-16 with two HRs in his career vs. Darvish.

Padres vs. Dodgers Pick and Prediction

Darvish is on the mound for the Padres but is it the Dodgers who have the pitching edge behind Anderson (12-1, 2.89) as he continues his breakout season?

Anderson didn’t have the best start to August, allowing five ER over 5.0 IP against the Giants, but the Dodgers still won that game 9-5. Anderson was 3-0 with a 1.11 ERA in July.

The Dodgers as a team were 21-5 last month and have gone 7-2 head to head vs. San Diego this season. San Diego is 3-4 in Darvish’s last seven starts and are 1-4 in their last five road games. It’s the best price of the weekend on the Dodgers on Sunday night, and that seems to be the side to play.

Pick: Dodgers -136
