San Diego Padres at New York Mets Betting Preview

Two of the best teams in the National League will square off in the finale of a three-game series Sunday as the San Diego Padres (54-42) take on the New York Mets (58-37). The Mets will host this Sunday night game at Citi Field, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:08 pm ET.

The Padres have taken the first two games of this series, including a 2-1 win on Saturday. In the win, Blake Snell went five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out five.

Offensively, Manny Machado drove in both runs with his 16th home run of the season. In total, the Padres only managed four hits on the day.

For New York, Chris Bassitt was excellent, allowing just two runs in seven innings while striking out 11. Unfortunately, the offense could muster very little against Snell.

Pete Alonso led the Mets’ offense with three hits while J.D. Davis added two, but the rest of the offense managed just three hits combined.

The Mets are favorites in this one playing at home. They are -120 to win while the Padres’ moneyline sits at +102. The runline features New York +1.5 (-220), and the over/under for total runs is 7.5.

Padres Eyeing Postseason

At 54-42, the Padres sit in second in the NL West, 10.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. Despite the large deficit, the Padres would still hold one of the Wild Card spots if the season ended today. With an eye on the postseason, the Padres will look to finish the sweep and pick up another win Sunday.

On the mound will be the Padres’ ace, Joe Musgrove. In 16 games, the 29-year-old Musgrove is 8-2 with a 2.42 ERA and 0.97 WHIP, and he has 102 strikeouts in 104 innings pitched.

Musgrove was roughed up a bit in his last start as he gave up five runs on nine hits in just five innings of work against the Rockies. He will look to bounce back Sunday.

Leading the Padres’ offense is third baseman Manny Machado. In 322 at bats, Machado is hitting .298/.373/.512 with a team-leading 16 home runs and 53 runs batted in.

Keep an eye on Jurickson Profar in this one. In eight at bats versus the Mets’ Carlos Carrasco, he is hitting .625 with a home run.

Mets Trying To Fend Off Braves In NL East

The New York Mets have been one of the best teams in baseball this year, but after losing the first two games of this series, they find themselves just a half-game up in the NL East. Hoping to create some separation, they will try to salvage the finale of this series.

On the mound for the Mets will be 35-year-old Carlos Carrasco. In 18 games, the righty is 10-4 with a 4.27 ERA and 1.33 WHIP, and he has 100 strikeouts in 99 innings.

Carrasco was brilliant in his last start against the Cubs. He threw six scoreless innings, allowing just five hits while striking out six.

Of all Mets’ hitters, Francisco Lindor has had the most success against Joe Musgrove in his career. In 14 at bats, he is hitting .357 with two home runs and three runs batted in.

Pete Alonso has been New York’s best hitter. In 351 at bats, he is hitting .271/.345/.521 with a team-leading 24 home runs and 78 runs batted in.

Take The Padres To Finish The Sweep

The Mets have been a hard team to bet against this season, but this seems like a great opportunity for the Padres to finish a sweep. Not only are the Mets on a three-game losing streak, but the Padres will start one of the most underrated starters in the game Sunday night.

If that wasn’t enough, the Padres are 5-1 in their last six games against the Mets and 4-1 in their last five games overall.

Certainly, the Mets are capable of pulling out a win here, but the most value is getting the Padres at +102 on the moneyline.
