San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres Betting Preview

A weekend series at Petco Park wraps up on Sunday as the San Francisco Giants try to make it two in a row over the San Diego Padres. The SF offense still wasn’t spectacular on Saturday, but they earned a 3-1 win for just their second victory in the last ten games.

The Padres aim to take three of four in this series with a win on Sunday. They seemingly have the pitching edge in the finale with Mackenzie Gore on the hill, and oddsmakers agree, making San Diego a -124 favorite.

There’s also some value on San Francisco at +106 in what should be a low-scoring game (O/U 7.5).

Giants Got Just Enough

Aside from a two-run HR from Wilmer Flores that broke a 1-1 tie in the 8th inning, the story of Saturday’s Giants win was Carlos Rodon. The left-hander pitched a complete-game three-hitter to help San Francisco to a much-needed win that put their record in July to just 2-7.

Alex Wood (5-7, 4.83 ERA) will try to build off Rodon’s solid performance when he makes his 17th start of the year on Sunday. Wood had seen some struggles recently, giving up 13 runs in 12 IP, but he looked solid last time out with 1 ER allowed over 5.0 IP in what ended up being a 6-2 loss to Arizona.

San Francisco got the win on Saturday despite scoring three runs or less for the 8th time in the last ten games. That trend will likely continue against Gore, who pitched six innings of three-hit ball against the Giants on May 22nd in a 10-1 Padres win.

Is Gore Back?

It’s not a bad price tag on San Diego at -124 with Gore on the mound. Oddsmakers had fallen out of favor with the rookie after he gave up 14 ER over just 6.1 IP in two starts against the Rockies, but he has bounced back with 1 ER allowed over 10.2 IP in wins over the Phillies (+128) and Dodgers (+183).

The big question for Sunday’s series finale is if the Padres offense can return to form after getting stymied by Rodon on Saturday. They’ve plated 7 ER against Wood in two games this season, getting a 4-2 and a 10-1 win.

Giants vs. Padres Pick and Prediction

That’s not a bad price tag at all on San Diego at home in the series finale, but then again, anything can happen in what might very well be a 2-1 or 3-2 game. Even so, the Giants are 2-4 at home against the Padres this season and now have dropped two of three at Petco. This might just be a bad matchup.

Gore has looked solid in his last two starts after sifting through some trouble, and San Diego has already beaten Wood twice in 2022. The San Diego price should be higher, which is concerning, but ultimately you have to go with the Padres here.

Pick: Padres -124
