Saturday Night Baseball: Minnesota Twins @ Detroit Tigers

The Minnesota Twins visit the Comerica Park in Detroit on Saturday night, where they will face off against the Tigers.  First pitch will be at 5:10 pm central time. Minnesota currently sits at a distant second to the Cleveland Indians in the American League Central division.  They hold a 53-61 record, 11 games behind Cleveland (Who has a 64-50 record). The Tigers, in the same division, own a 47-68 record. They are in third place, 17 and a half games behind Cleveland.  The Twins are favored in this matchup: at -145.

Pitching Matchup

Kyle Gibson will start the game on the mound for the Twins.  He is 5-9 on the season. His ERA stands at 3.60, an improvement from his career ERA of 4.52.  He also has 135 strikeouts. His last start was against the division leading Indians. He allowed six runs over five innings pitched.  He will definitely look to put that start behind him as he begins this one on Saturday.

For the Tigers, Francisco Liriano will be on the mound.  He signed with the Tigers over the offseason, leaving the Twins in the process.  This will be his first matchup against them, which could add more motivation for each side to win.  He is 3-6 on the year so far, and owns a 4.37 ERA. He also hasn’t won a game for 12 straight starts, so he will definitely want to end that streak today.

Minnesota Twins

Looking at the Twins stat sheet, Eddie Rosario is all over the place.  He is hitting .296 so far this season, a pretty good number.  He has also driven in 66 runs, and has hit 20 home runs. Eduardo Escobar has also been having a good season.  He is hitting .274 currently, and has 63 RBIs.  Look for one of these two or Joe Mauer to be a big factor in this one.  Mauer is hitting .267, and has 34 RBIs, however, it is tough to count out a player who has been hitting the ball very well his entire career, especially in clutch situations.

Detroit Tigers

For Detroit, Nicholas Castellanos is flat out the best hitter at this juncture.  He is currently hitting .283. He also has 59 RBIs, and has crushed 16 home runs.  It is safe to say that Detroit will need a good performance from him in order to win.  Jose Iglesias has also been having a good season for the Tigers.  He is hitting .266, and has 47 RBIs. He also has been hitting a few home runs, with 5.

Twins Top Tigers

Odds are, Minnesota comes away with this road win.  However, things do tend to happen when players play their former teams.  It is possible that Liriano could pitch a great game in front of his new home crowd.  However, the Twins have better pitching and better hitting. WIthout a great performance from at least one Detroit player or that combined with some Twins mistakes, Minnesota should win this one.  Bet on the Minnesota Twins at -145.
