Simpson Takes Title At RBC Heritage

The PGA was back for the second week without spectators. This weekend’s tournament was held on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.

The RBC Heritage had many of the big names in golf, with Webb Simpson coming out with a win. He had to finish play on Sunday after a two-hour, 46-minute weather delay.

“The Tour did a great job getting us out there pretty quickly, only had a 20-minute warmup,” said Simpson. “It was a long day on the golf course as well, I didn’t really get it going until 12, and then the putts started going in, and I was getting confident, and it’s amazing to be standing here right now.”

He had a final round of 64 and birdied five of the last seven holes. He needed every one of those winning by only one stroke.

Here is the final leaderboard:

  • Webb Simpson (-22)
  • Abraham Ancer (-21)
  • Daniel Berger (-20)
  • Tyrrell Hatton (-20)
  • Sergio Garcia (-19)
  • Joaquin Niemann (-19)
  • Brooks Koepka (-18)

This was Simpson’s seventh win on the PGA Tour, second this season. His other victory came in February at TPC Scottsdale.

McIlroy Struggles

One guy that wasn’t on the top was Rory McIlroy. After his impressive outing back, he failed to stay on the leaderboard in Hilton Head.

“Once I got here, and I played the golf course, I sort of remembered why I haven’t been here for a while,” said McIlroy. “It’s tough. Like it’s a lovely place. There’s other courses on Tour that probably fit my game a little bit better.”

Koepka In Contention

The four-time major champion Brooks Koepka was in contention this weekend for the first time in almost a year. This fact seems a little odd, especially with the break due to the coronavirus.

“It’s just nice to feel something again,” Koepka said after a final-round 65. “Augusta was the last time I probably ever felt anything. So just feels good to be back somewhat. (I didn’t) win it, but it was somewhat of a chance.”

He has missed plenty of golfing lately, some due to injury on top of the virus. He was ranked No. 1 for eight months before suffering a knee injury.

“It feels like it’s been a really long time since I’ve even felt some juices flowing,” Koepka said. “It just felt nice to be in contention again.”

Upcoming Schedule

Koepka will have plenty of chances in the next couple of weeks as golf is back in full swing. He will be defending his PGA Championship win in early August at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
