Sunday Night Football: Detroit Lions vs. New England Patriots

The Detroit Lions will host the New England Patriots for a week three battle in the NFL. The game will be featured on Sunday Night Football and will conclude the full Sunday slate of games. The last time that these two teams met was during the 2014 season, and the Patriots won that game by a score of 34-7.

The Detroit Lions come into this game with a 0-2 record, and they haven’t looked real impressive in either game. The Lions were blown out by the New York Jets in the season opener before losing to the San Francisco 49ers in week two. The Patriots beat the Houston Texans in week one, before dropping a game to the Jacksonville Jaguars in week two. The Patriots come into this game as a seven-point favorite.

Lions Can’t Stop Opponents

The Detroit Lions defense is the biggest reason that the team is 0-2 through their first two games. The Lions have given up a whopping 39.0 points per game so far this season which ranks as the second-worst mark in the NFL. Detroit has been getting torched by the run game, giving up almost six yards a carry through their first two games. The Lions need to find a way to get some stops in this game.

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has put up some monster passing numbers so far this season but has also struggled with turnovers. Stafford has thrown for 633 yards and four touchdowns this season, but his four interceptions have proved extremely costly. The Lions need Stafford to play much better against the Patriots on Sunday night.

Brady Getting New Target

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady continues to play terrific football, and will now be getting a new target ahead of week three. Former Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon is expected to play against the Lions after being acquired by the Patriots earlier this week. Gordon is a former All-Pro wide receiver and should make the Patriots offense ever more deadly.

The Patriots defense has struggled so far this season, and they have been especially bad trying to defend the pass. New England gave up 376 yards and four touchdown passes to Jags quarterback Blake Bortles last weekend in the loss. The Patriots know that the Lions will want to throw the ball against them on Sunday night, and their defense will have to rise to the challenge.

Patriots Roll Lions

Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia is still looking for his first career win , and would love to get it against his former team. The Lions always have a chance to score points with Matthew Stafford under center, but their defense has to improve in a hurry if they want to compete with the Patriots.

New England struggled as a team in their loss to the Jaguars, but Tom Brady doesn’t usually lose back to back games. Adding Josh Gordon into the mix should give the Patriots plenty of offense to beat the Lions on Sunday night. Bet the New England Patriots -7.0 over the Lions in this game.
