Super Bowl LIV: Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Francisco 49ers Betting Preview

One year after one of the most disappointing Super Bowls in recent memory, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers appear poised to put on a great show in Super Bowl LIV. There has been some movement in the line during the week, but at the moment, the Chiefs are one-point favorites, with an over/under of 54.5 points.

The 49ers started the season fast, winning eight in a row before suffering their first loss. Toward the end of the season, they continued to look like the best team in football. San Francisco has beaten both the Vikings and Packers by comfortable 17-point margins during the playoffs and is now in search of its sixth Super Bowl win in franchise history.

As for the Chiefs, they’ve shaken off a midseason slump and look like the team we thought they were at the start of the season. Since falling behind 24-0 the Texans in the divisional round, the Chiefs have been dominant, ultimately beating Houston 51-31 and cruising over the Titans 35-24 to send them to the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years.

All About Mahomes

Needless to say, quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the biggest key to Kansas City’s success. The Chiefs have had an inconsistent running game all season, leaving Mahomes to carry the offense. He’s shaken off a sluggish start in both playoff games to throw eight touchdown passes with no interceptions while playing some of his best football of the season.

Of course, facing the San Francisco defense might be his biggest challenge of the season. The 49ers excel at getting after the quarterback and do so without needing to blitz a lot. To his credit, Mahomes is athletic and elusive, which is why he was sacked just 17 times in 14 games during the regular season.

If the San Francisco pass rush isn’t able to get sacks or force Mahomes to throw the ball away, they’ll be challenged to slow down all of Kansas City’s skill players.

Three-Man Game

The biggest strength of the San Francisco offense all season has been its rushing attack. The 49ers have three running backs in Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman, and Matt Brieda who each bring something different to the table.

The Kansas City defense deserves a lot of credit for slowing down Derrick Henry during the AFC Championship Game. However, stopping all three of San Francisco’s running backs may not be as easy.

The 49ers also have an underrated passing attack behind Jimmy Garoppolo. With a midseason trade for Emanuel Sanders and the emergence of rookie Deebo Samuel, the 49ers have speed on the outside that could prevent the Chiefs from selling out to stop the run.

San Francisco tight end George Kittle is also a key figure, with the Chiefs struggling to stop tight ends this season.

Team Over The Individual

There is no doubt that Mahomes will be the best player on the field during the Super Bowl. However, the 49ers have more talent from top to bottom and are capable of winning battles on both sides of the ball. In what figures to be a close game, bet on the 49ers to win Super Bowl LIV.
