Super Bowl LV Game and Betting Preview

After two grueling weeks of waiting since the Conference Championships, Super Bowl LV is upon us this Sunday as the Kansas City Chiefs (16-2) take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (14-5). This one will be played in Raymond James Stadium, the home of the Buccaneers. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 pm ET.

This is truly a battle of two of the best quarterbacks in the game. For Mahomes, he is looking to win back-to-back championships and cement his name as one of the best in the game. For Brady, one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, he is looking for his seventh Super Bowl ring in his tenth appearance.

To get here, the Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship 38-24. Mahomes threw for 325 yards and 3 touchdowns while Tyreek Hill had 172 yards receiving and Travis Kelce had 118 and 2 touchdowns. The Chiefs defense was able to get to Josh Allen for 4 sacks and an interception.

The Buccaneers had to get by a really good Green Bay Packers team. Winning 31-26, Tom Brady threw for 280 yards and 3 touchdowns. Of some concern was the 3 interceptions he also threw. The Buccaneers’ defense got it done intercepting Aaron Rodgers once and sacking him five times.

The Chiefs are slight favorites in this one. They are -166 to win while the Buccaneers are +144. The spread features Tampa Bay +3 while the over/under for total points is 55.5.

By The Numbers

These are the two highest-scoring teams in the NFL this season. The Buccaneers rank 2nd in the NFL, averaging 30.7 points per game. The Chiefs rank 5th averaging 29.6 points.

Defensively, these two were very similar. Tampa Bay ranks 9th in scoring defense, allowing 22.3 points per game to opponents. The Chiefs are right behind them in 10th, allowing 22.4 points.

Kansas City Looks To Go Back-To-Back

After winning the Super Bowl last season, the Chiefs have left little doubt about their abilities after losing just two games this season (one of which was in the last week of the regular season when they rested starters). Now, they are trying to win their second Super Bowl in as many years.

Leading the way for Andy Reid’s team is quarterback Patrick Mahomes. This season, Mahomes threw for 4,740 yards, 38 touchdowns, and just 6 interceptions. He also rushed for 308 yards and another two scores.

Mahomes has the advantage of having two of the best receiving options in the league. Tyreek Hill (1,276 yards, 15 touchdowns) and tight end Travis Kelce (1,416 yards, 11 touchdowns) make up arguably the best receiving tandem in the NFL.

Of some concern for the Chiefs against a solid Bucs’ pass rush is a weakened offensive line. Not only has Mitchell Schwartz been out since Week 11, but Pro Bowl left tackle Eric Fischer is also out after injuring his Achilles in the AFC Championship game.

Tampa Bay Looking To Get Brady To Seven

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Tom Brady this offseason, this is the exact scenario they had in mind. Brady not only brought consistency under center for the Bucs, but he also brought a winning mentality that has gotten them to the Super Bowl.

This season, Brady threw for 4,633 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions during the regular season.

He certainly has solid options to throw to. Mike Evans (1,006 yards, 13 touchdowns), Chris Godwin (840 yards, 7 touchdowns), Rob Gronkowski (623 yards, 7 touchdowns), and Antonio Brown (483 yards, 4 touchdowns) can all give opposing defenses fits.

Speaking of defenses, it may be the key to a win for Tampa Bay. The leaders this season on the Bucs include Devin White (140 tackles), Jason Pierre-Paul (9.5 sacks) and Carlton Davis (4 interceptions).

Taking Kansas City To Win And Cover

It is tough to bet against Tom Brady, given his success throughout his career in Super Bowls. Still, Kansas City has been the best team in the NFL for the last two seasons, and it is hard to bet against the defending champs.

There are certainly avenues for both teams to win this game, but it just seems a little clearer for the Chiefs, given their dynamic offense with Mahomes, Kelce, and Hill. For my money, I am taking Kansas City to not only win but to cover the 3-point spread as well.
