Texas Longhorns at Oklahoma Sooners Betting Preview

Tuesday night features an exciting Big 12 matchup as the No. 13 Texas Longhorns (13-5) take on the No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners (13-5). Oklahoma will host this one at Lloyd Noble Center, with tipoff scheduled for 9:00 pm ET.

Not only does this matchup have significant implications for overall rankings and resumes as we approach the postseason, but it is a big matchup for Big 12 standings. The Longhorns sit in 4th, but they are just a game behind the 2nd place Sooners.

For the Longhorns, they are trying to exact some revenge in this one. On January 26, the Sooners took the first matchup 80-79 at Texas. Starting with that loss, Texas lost three straight but has since had back-to-back wins against Kansas State (80-77) and TCU (70-55).

Oklahoma comes into this one scorching hot as they have won seven of their last eight, including wins over Texas, No. 11 Alabama, and No. 14 West Virginia. Their lone loss in that time was a 57-52 road loss to No. 7 Texas Tech. They will look to stay hot at home, where they are 10-1 on the season.

Oklahoma is the slight favorite playing at home. The spread features Texas +1.5 while the over/under for total points is 141.

By The Numbers

Both of these teams are solid on the offensive side. In terms of scoring, Oklahoma ranks 52nd, averaging 76.4 points per game. The Longhorns aren’t too far behind them, ranking 66th, averaging 75.3 points per game.

Defensively, it is Texas who has the edge. They rank 87th allowing 67.6 points per game to opponents. The Sooners rank 106th allowing 68.3 points per game.

Texas Looking To Even Season Series

While it is going to be a tall task to catch the undefeated Baylor Bears for the top seed in the Big 12, Texas is within striking distance of both Kansas and Oklahoma. The Longhorns can take a big step in the conference if they can steal one on the road against the Sooners.

Leading the way for Texas is guard Andrew Jones. On the season, he is averaging 15.9 points on 42.9% shooting. He is also chipping in 4.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and a steal per game.

He doesn’t have to do it alone, though. The Longhorns have three other scorers averaging double digits in Courtney Ramey (13.2 points, 3 rebounds, 4.1 assists), Matt Coleman III (12.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.2 steals), and Greg Brown (11.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.1 blocks).

Oklahoma Hopes To Stay Hot

Oklahoma comes into this one with a lot of confidence. Not only have they been one of the hottest teams in the country, but they have been doing it against good teams. After a thrilling double-overtime win on Saturday over No. 14 West Virginia, the Sooners will look to keep the momentum going and stay hot against a good Texas team.

The star for the Sooners this season has been guard Austin Reaves. The Sooners were able to get by while he was out due to COVID-19 protocols, but his return has given them a huge boost as of late. On the season, Reaves is leading the team in scoring (16.6 points), rebounds (5.6), and assists (5.4).

Other significant contributors include De’Vion Harmon (12.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.2 steals), Brady Manek (10.9 points, 5.2 rebounds), and Umoja Gibson (10.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.3 steals).

Taking Sooners To Win And Cover

While this is a great matchup, there are just a handful of things pushing me towards Oklahoma. First, they have been undoubtedly the hottest team as of late. Yes, Texas has won two in a row, but they have been against subpar teams.

Furthermore, Oklahoma has been dominant at 10-1 at home this season. Last, the Sooners have been the much stronger team against the spread. They are 12-5-1 this season, while Texas is just 7-11.

Overall, I am taking Oklahoma to both win and cover the small 1.5-point spread.
