The Blues Have Reached The Cup Finals

The St. Louis Blues wrapped up the Western Conference Final with a big statement win over the San Jose Sharks in Game 6. The Blues defeated the Sharks by a score of 5-1 and outscored them in the last two games of the series 10-1. The Blues will now face the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Finals, a matchup of the two hottest teams in hockey.

The Road So Far

The St. Louis Blues have had a memorable and historic season so far in 2018-19. On January 2, St. Louis had the worst record in the entire NHL, but now they are four games away from winning their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.

A lot of the Blues’ success can be attributed to rookie goaltender Jordan Binnington. Jordan has become the first Blues goaltender to record a shutout in the postseason. The history does not stop there. Jaden Schwartz became the first player in Blues history to score multiple hat tricks in a postseason. On Tuesday, captain Alex Pietrangelo set a Blues franchise record for points in a single postseason for a defenseman.

The Blues have come from the third seed in the West to the finals by defeating the Winnipeg Jets, the Dallas Stars, and the San Jose Sharks, and it is now time for them to look ahead to the Bruins.

The History

The last time the Blues were in the Stanley Cup was in 1970, ironically against the Boston Bruins. In 1970 the Bruins swept the Blues, defeating them with Bobby Orr’s famous overtime goal. Lucky for the Blues that is far in the past, and they have this year to look forward to.

The Goalies

In the NHL playoffs, the goalies typically tell the story of the game. In the finals this year, both goalies are on fire and should make for an interesting matchup. BInnington has been great for the Blues, only allowing two goals in the final three games in the Sharks series. So far in the playoffs, Binnington is 11-7 with a 2.44 GAA, and a .912 save percentage.

On the other side, Tuukka Rask will be a tough task for the Blues to overcome. Rask has had his best playoff performance of his career this season for the Bruins. With a 12-4 record, two shutouts, a 1.84 GAA and a .942 save percentage, the Blues will have to bring their “A” game to slow Rask down.

What To Expect

The Blues have a lot on the line in the Finals with a chance to win the first Stanley Cup in franchise history. The Bruins won their last Stanley Cup in 2011 and look to get their seventh Cup this season.

The Bruins will put their trust in their veteran leadership, their experience in the Stanley Cup, and the firepower they’ve had from their depth in their 3rd and 4th lines.

The Blues will rely on their strong defense and current hot streak to push them through the Finals. That with the combination of rookie goalie Jordan Binnington’s ice-cool composure could be enough to allow the Blues to hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup in the end despite being the underdog.
