Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadians Betting Preview

The NHL season is past the midway point, and this matchup features two teams who have very different views as they look to the future of their franchises. The Leafs find themselves battling for playoff seeding while the Canadians are looking to develop, evaluate, and plan for the future.

Toronto rolls into this matchup playing consistent hockey as of late. They are 7-3-0 in their last ten games. They have 67 points on the season, which is good for 3rd place in the Atlantic Division standings.

The Canadians had high hopes after reaching the Stanley Cup Finals last year, but those hopes quickly dwindled this season. Montreal currently has a lackluster 27 points on the season off of their 10-33-7 record. Since their coaching change, the play has improved, and the team is currently riding a two-game winning streak.

The Maple Leafs are the heavy money line betting favorite at -350 over the Montreal Canadians.

Toronto Has A Balanced Attack

The Maple Leafs are finding their stride this season as they sit in a playoff position at this point in the season. They are top 10 in the NHL in both goals per game and goals against per game.

A major part of the 3.58 goals per game average is the recent play from leader Auston Matthews who has 59 points on the season from his 33 goals and 26 assists. Even with a bruised face, Matthews will be sure to make an impact in this contest.

Starting goaltender Jack Campbell holds a 23-8-3 record this season with a 2.41 GAA and a .922 save percentage. His solid play is a direct impact on the success of the Maple Leafs this season.

Canadians Getting Culture Change

Martin St. Louis was named interim Head Coach of the Montreal Canadians, and he surely has brought a newfound attitude to the team as of late. Montreal is still last in the Atlantic Division with 27 points, but this time of the season is about building a culture for next year and years to come.

A bright spot for Montreal is the recent play by rookie forward Cole Caufield, who has registered 5 points in his last five games. Out of those five points, four of those are goals for the rookie. Caulfield is surely to be a centerpiece for this franchise for seasons to come.

The Canadians have struggled all season, and their statistics show just how bad it is. They rank dead last in both goals per game (2.20) and goals against per game (3.90) this season. Montreal truly needs to hit the reset button and start building a new culture to get them back to the playoffs.

Toronto Dominates in Montreal

The Maple Leafs are a powerhouse compared to the last place Montreal Canadiens. Even though the Canadiens have played well as of late, they are running into a buzzsaw of the Maple Leafs in this contest.

This is the first contest between these two Canadian rivals since their matchup in October, in which Toronto won 2-1. Looking at this game, it is hard not to believe that Toronto will cover the puck line in this contest.

Take the Maple Leafs to cover the -1.5 puck line at (-125) in this Atlantic Division contest on Monday evening.
