Atlanta Falcons vs. Carolina Panthers Betting Preview

Thursday Night Football features a matchup of NFC South rivals as the Atlanta Falcons (1-6) square off with the Carolina Panthers (3-4). Kickoff for this one is scheduled for 8:20 pm ET from Bank of America Stadium.

The Falcons have had a season to forget so far. They have already fired their head coach and general manager, and they continue to find ways to lose ballgames. Despite having a six point lead late in their game last week against the Lions, the Falcons allowed Detroit to march down the field for the game winning touchdown. .

The Panthers come into this one having lost two in a row after falling 23-16 to the Bears and 27-24 versus the Saints over the last couple weeks. While there is optimism for the Panthers as Christian McCaffrey has returned to practice, but he’s probably still a game away from returning.

The Panthers come into this one as the favorite playing at home. They are -126 to win this contest while the Falcons sit at +108 underdogs. The spread has Carolina -2.5, while the over/under for total points is 51.5.

By The Numbers

Atlanta has had the higher scoring offense of the two, putting up 26 points per game while Carolina has averaged 23.1 per contest.

The Panthers hold the edg defensively, ranking 13th in points allowed at 24ppg,  compared to the Falcons 26th ranked unit that gives up 29.6 points.

Falcons Look To Find Way To Close Games

It is not hard to imagine a world in which the Falcons are 4-3 at this point. Having blown 4th quarter leads to the Bears, and Cowboys to name a few, frustrations turned into job losses for the coaching staff.

Matt Ryan has had a productive year despite the team’s struggles, throwing for 2,181 yards, 12 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. It’s the offensive line that has failed Ryan, allowing 15 sacks on the year. .

The good news for the Atlanta QB is that his best wide receiver should be available, as Julio Jones was a full participant at practice on Wednesday. On the season, Jones has 31 receptions for 447 yards and 2 touchdowns. Throw in Calvin Ridley (40 receptions, 615 yards, 6 touchdowns) and it is a pretty impressive tandem.

On the ground, Todd Gurley has rushed 122 times for 485 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Carolina Looks To Get Back To .500

After back-to-back heartbreakers, the Panthers will look to even up their win-loss record and take down their divisional foe. To do so, they will lean on quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who has thrown for 1,930 yards, 8 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.

In McCaffrey’s absence, Mike Davis has led the way in the rushing game. Davis has carried the ball 71 times for 284 yards and 2 scores, but those numbers have faltered a bit in the last two games. .

Taking The Panthers To Win And Cover

This game is a bit of a tough one. On paper, especially with Jones being a go, the Falcons offense has the potential to put up 25+ points, but you still can’t trust the Atlanta defense.

Just a few weeks ago, the Panthers went on the road and beat the Falcons on their own turf. Until Atlanta proves they can play a full 60 minutes, I don’t see any reason to think the Panthers don’t run away with this one. For my money, I am taking Carolina despite laying the 2.5 points.
