Colorado Gets First SuperBook Outside Las Vegas

Each year, Las Vegas is home for the famous SuperContest, which brings together the country’s top bettors. Now, Colorado will have a chance to get itself involved in the mix. Despite the sports world in America being completely shut down, The Centennial State will open its doors for sports betting on May 1.

On Monday, SuperBook made an announcement saying it will partner with The Lodge Casino in Black Hawk to become part of the Colorado sports betting market. Superbook Executive Vice President Jay Kornegay released a statement saying that his company has “written the playbook on sports betting.”

“We believe The Lodge is a perfect fit for our initial expansion opportunities outside Las Vegas,” said Kornegay. “We have maintained the highest levels of technology and service in a highly regulated industry. We have written the playbook on sports betting in the United States, and now we will put it in action in Colorado.”

The sportsbook is also in discussions to partner with Jacobs Entertainment to make the brand bigger and bring it to more states than just Colorado. Dan Hartman, director of the Colorado Division of Gaming, believes the state will be ready to go by the start of the month.

“We have not really approached the launch date yet,” said Harman. “We’re still moving everything forward as far as licensing and everything to make sure we reach that May 1 date and are able to go. Those discussions certainly will happen later on, probably in April, as this COVID crisis moves forward, and we see where the casino industry is at, at this time.”

Colorado’s rollout is going to be an interesting case study for the rest of the country. Right now, there are only three retail locations – Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek.

In total, 33 casinos can apply for a master license, and nearly all of them have done so. The state’s 10 percent tax rate on sports betting revenue is right on par with the rest of the country.

Going Mobile

Because of the large area, going with the mobile betting applications seemed like a natural fit to make things easier for the residents of Colorado. This will especially helpful in the colder months when people will not be as anxious to leave their homes.

Colorado is home to numerous professional sports franchises, including MLB’s Colorado Rockies, the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, the NFL’s Denver Broncos, and the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche. In addition, there is also the Denver Rapids of the MLS. With all of the four major sports covered, fans will be more likely to bet on those games.

Hopefully, sports will return to our lives soon, and states like Colorado can flourish with the new income from sports betting. The coronavirus outbreak has done a number on the U.S., cutting jobs and income for a large number of people.

With only a couple of obscure and virtual sports to bet on, it’s important to get things back to normal as soon as possible.
