Houston Texans at Tampa Bay Buccaneers Betting Preview

The Houston Texans will be in Florida on Saturday to kick off the NFL weekend, squaring off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers hope to slow the Texans down this weekend and keep them from clinching the AFC South title on their turf. The Texans can also clinch with a Titans loss. Jameis Winston is coming off back-to-back 450-yard games and looks for that to continue.

Deshaun Watson has completed over 70 percent of his passes in two of his last three games but has also thrown four picks in that time span. Winston might end up leading the league in both yards and interceptions this season. Vegas has the Texans favored by three in the matchup, and so far, 82 percent of the money has gone on them. The over/under is set at 50, and 69 percent of the money has gone on the over.

Rising Up

The Watson-led Texans have had a great season so far, even without JJ Watt. Watson has thrown 25 touchdowns to 11 picks this season, and he’s also run in seven scores.

His number one wideout, DeAndre Hopkins, has tallied over 1,100 yards and seven touchdowns on the season. When Will Fuller has been healthy, he has been an elite second option, with 659 receiving yards in 10 games this season.

The Texans have the seventh-ranked rushing offense in the league, led by Carlos Hyde, who has 1,030 yards on the ground thus far. Their defense ranks 19th overall in the NFL but has been timely. They’ve been there when needed. The Texans’ passing defense has been especially abysmal, as they rank 28th and are facing a quarterback that can air it out.

Bucking the Trend

It’s no secret that Winston turns the ball over way too much, but when he’s on fire, he’s on fire. And he has much to do with whether the Bucs can pull off the upset this weekend. His top two wideouts — Mike Evans and Chris Godwin — are both out for this game, but Winston has found great chemistry with Breshad Perriman.

The Bucs offense is ranked third in the NFL, but the problem has been their defense ranking 30th. They cut down on the turnovers, and their defense gets a few back, and this is a different team.

The problem for the Texans is that the Bucs rushing defense has been more than formidable, ranking first in the league. Watson is going to have to attempt to get the win through the air.

Claiming Your Stakes

The Texans are .500 against the spread this season, while the Bucs are 5-8-1. Tampa Bay is an awful 0-4-1 against the spread when playing at home, the worst mark in the league. Maybe Tampa Bay can buck that trend this weekend, and with the Texans’ terrible passing defense, I expect them to do just that.

Bruce Arians will lead his team to victory on Saturday. The Bucs win and cover the points, and I’ve got my money on the over, as this game will be a shootout.
