Los Angeles Lakers at San Antonio Spurs Betting Preview

Tuesday night features a Western Conference showdown of two teams who have gotten off to rough starts as the Los Angeles Lakers (1-2) take on the San Antonio Spurs (1-2). The Spurs will host this one at the AT&T Center, with tipoff scheduled for 8:30 pm ET.

After dropping back-to-back games to open the season, the Lakers did pick up their first win on Sunday with a 121-118 win over the Memphis Grizzlies. In the win, Carmelo Anthony led the scoring with 28 points while Anthony Davis (22) and LeBron James (19) got in on the action as well.

For the Spurs, they won their opener but have now dropped back-to-back games entering play Tuesday. On Saturday, they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks 121-111. In the loss, Doug McDermott led the team with 25 points, while Keldon Johnson added 20.

The Lakers are the favorites despite playing on the road. They are -190 to win while the Spurs’ moneyline sits at +160. The spread features San Antonio +4.5 (-110).

More Odds

At +260, the Lakers are the favorites to win the Western Conference this year. The Spurs just +8500 to win the West.

In terms of winning the NBA Finals, the Lakers have the second-best odds at +500, while the Spurs are longshots at +24000.

By The Numbers

The Lakers have been struggling as of late. In fact, in their last six games, they are just 1-5 overall and 0-6 against the spread. They are, however, 5-1 in their last six games against the Spurs.

For San Antonio, they are just 1-7 in their last eight games overall. In six of their last nine, though, the over has hit.

Lakers Trio Still Trying To Click

With the addition of Russell Westbrook to the already formidable lineup that features LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Lakers are expected to do big things this year. Early on, though, it still appears that they are trying to find their groove as they have lost two of the first three. Still, the talent is too deep for the Lakers to not eventually rise to the top of a solid Western Conference.

Leading the way for the Lakers is the future Hall-of-Famer LeBron James. Through three games, James is averaging 26 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.7 steals.

The other leading scorer is Anthony Davis, who is averaging 25.7 points, 11 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks in the early going.

For Westbrook, it has been a little tougher to get going as he is averaging just 12 points per game. Despite the low-scoring output, he is also averaging 7.7 rebounds and 8.7 assists per night.

The Lakers currently rank 12th in scoring (113.3 points per game), but they are 29th in scoring defense as they are allowing opponents 118 points per game.

Spurs Trying To Show Improvement From Last Season

Finishing the season 33-39 and finishing 10th in the Western Conference, it was quite a disappointing season for the San Antonio Spurs. Trying to build off of their lackluster performance last year, a win over the Lakers could be a good benchmark to clear early on.

One thing that they have to improve on is their play at home. Last year, they were 19-17 on the road, but they were a disappointing 14-22 at the AT&T Center.

Leading the offense for San Antonio thus far is forward Keldon Johnson. He is averaging 20.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, two assists, and 1.3 steals per game.

Aside from Johnson, Derrick White (15.3 points, 6.7 assists), Doug McDermott (14 points), Dejounte Murray (13.3 points, eight rebounds, seven assists), Lonnie Walker IV (13.3 points, four rebounds), and Jakob Poetl (12.3 points, 9.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists have had good starts to the year.

Thus far, the Spurs rank 11th in scoring defense, allowing opponents just 106.7 points per game.

Taking The Lakers To Win And Cover

As poorly as the Lakers have played early on, they still have far superior talent than the Spurs at this point.

Granted, the likes of LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis, and even Carmelo Anthony need to prove they can play in unison, but when it clicks, it could get scary for opponents.

Especially since the Spurs have had some struggles at home, expect L.A. to come out and take this game with relative ease.

Take the Lakers to both win and cover.
