NCAA Football News and Notes for November 15

Week 11 of the college football season certainly did not disappoint. In a weekend that featured thrillers, upsets, and spectacular performances, the action was exciting and could have major implications for the postseason.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the biggest stories from an exciting weekend of football.

Oklahoma Has Huge Setback In Loss To Baylor

Given that Baylor was ranked in the top 25, this wasn’t the biggest upset of the season, but Oklahoma’s loss to Baylor will certainly have a big ripple effect for both the standings and for the College Football Playoffs.

On Saturday, Oklahoma was sunk after only scoring two touchdowns against a tough Baylor defense. In fact, Sooners’ star quarterback Caleb Williams threw for just 146 yards and no touchdowns while also throwing two interceptions and being sacked three times.

As a whole, the Sooners’ offense was just stagnant. Both Williams and Kennedy Brooks scored touchdowns on the ground, but Oklahoma couldn’t get anything else going.

On the flip side, Baylor quarterback Gerry Bohanon had a nice day. While he threw for just 117 yards and a touchdown (with one interception), he did rush for 107 yards and two scores.

Leading the rushing attack for Baylor was Abram Smith, who rushed 20 times for 148 yards.

This will likely push Oklahoma out of the top 10 when the rankings come out this week. Even if they finish the season strong, this could very well take them out of any discussions for the College Football Playoffs.

The biggest benefactors of Oklahoma’s loss include No. 5 Cincinnati (beat South Florida 45-28), No. 6 Michigan (beat Penn State 21-17), and possibly even No. 2 Alabama (beat New Mexico State 59-3).

Oklahoma still currently has the fifth-best odds of winning the National Championship at +4000.

Could Texas Loss Lead To Dismissal Of Coach

It has been a long fall for a Texas Longhorn team that used to be synonymous with winning. After a brutal 57-56 loss to Kansas Saturday, the Longhorns have now lost five games in a row for the first time in over 50 years.

Currently, they are 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the Big 12, where they sit tied for seventh overall.

There are some that have speculated that this abysmal season could lead to the dismissal of head coach Steve Sarkisian. Despite the fact that he is in just his first season in Texas, the Longhorns’ lack of success has been resounding.

To think, the team hasn’t even made the move to the SEC yet, arguably the nation’s best conference. Unless Texas starts to get things figured out, that could only make matters worse for a program that has struggled to consistently perform in recent years.

Is that all Sarkisian’s fault? Absolutely not. However, with another struggling season, he may be made the scapegoat for the Longhorns.

Texas Tech Sets Season Record, Becomes Bowl Eligible

With a 41-38 win over the Iowa State Cyclones, the Texas Tech Red Raiders (6-4) are bowl eligible for the first time in the last several years.

While that is an impressive feat in itself, how they did it was even more impressive. The Red Raiders won their game on a 62-yard field goal by Jonathan Garibay.

Not only did that field goal give the Red Raiders the win, but it set the record for the longest field goal of the season. The record had been held by Oregon State’s Everett Hayes, who had a 60-yard kick earlier in the season but was surpassed by Garibay Saturday.

The Red Raiders will hope to keep the momentum going as they face off with No. 10 Oklahoma State next week.
