NCAA Football News and Notes: Week 4’s Interesting Games

While week 4 features a full slate of games in college football, there are a few in particular that are especially noteworthy this weekend.

No. 11 Michigan Wolverines at No. 13 Wisconsin Badgers

Saturday features a Big Ten showdown when Michigan (2-0) faces off with Wisconsin (2-0). Michigan will look to Shea Patterson to lead them from under center. On the season he has thrown for 410 yards and three touchdowns. On the ground, freshman Zach Charbonnet is leading the way with 190 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

For the Badgers, Jack Coan has gotten off to a nice start, throwing for 564 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. Jonathan Taylor has led the way on the ground with 237 yards and five touchdowns.

No. 8 Auburn Tigers at No. 17 Texas A&M Aggies

In an SEC matchup, Auburn (3-0) will be taking on Texas A&M (2-1). For Auburn, true freshman Bo Nix has the Tigers undefeated as he has thrown for 545 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions, while JaTarvious Whitlow has rushed for 341 yards and three touchdowns.

For the Aggies, Kellen Mond has thrown for 747 yards and five touchdowns, although he also has three interceptions. Jhamon Ausbon leads the Aggies in receptions with 17 catches for 253 yards and two touchdowns.

No. 7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs

In a battle of top-10 teams, Notre Dame (2-0) will travel to take on Georgia (3-0). For the Irish, Ian Book has thrown for 553 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions. Chase Claypool has led Notre Dame in receiving with nine catches for 190 yards and a touchdown.

For Georgia, it is Jake Fromm leading from under center with 601 yards passing and five touchdowns. On the ground, Georgia is led by D’Andre Swift, who has 290 yards and two touchdowns rushing.

Could Other States Follow California?

It has been reported for a while now that California has a bill that has worked its way through Congress and is now sitting on the governor’s desk that could allow athletes to make money off of their name, image and likeness. While the NCAA has tried to threaten that California universities could find their athletes ineligible by NCAA rules, that has not slowed down the California legislators trying to pass the bill.

It appears that they might not be alone. In New York, Senator Kevin Parker has introduced a similar bill known as the “New York collegiate athletic participation compensation act.”

Not only does it include a player’s ability to be paid based off of their name, image or likeness, it also gives college athletes the ability to make a little extra dough at the end of the season. Essentially, the bill says that at the end of each school year, the college has to take 15 percent of its revenue earned from athletic ticket sales and distribute that amongst the student-athletes.

It may not stop there either. Reportedly there are a couple of legislators in South Carolina that are looking at introducing a similar bill.

While things appear to be holding steady as of now, it will be interesting if this is the beginning of the end of the days where student-athletes are not compensated for their play at universities. If that is the case, it will be interesting to see what changes the NCAA may make as a result and if it will have any further ramifications for universities and programs.

While these state legislators seem to support it, there are plenty of people who have spoken to its opposition. Washington State coach Mike Leach is adamantly against it, and Tim Tebow doesn’t think that it is necessary either.

Add Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll to that list, too. Carroll doesn’t think it is necessary as he feels the scholarships and other perks the student-athletes receive are more than enough. While people will argue on both sides, it doesn’t appear this argument is going to die down anytime soon.

CSU Quarterback Out For Season

Sadly, some athletes just can’t catch a break. It seems like Colorado State’s quarterback, Collin Hill, fits into that category. The senior’s season is done after he tore the ACL in his left knee after taking a hit in last week’s game against Arkansas by defensive back Joe Foucha.

Hill’s bad luck stems from the fact that not only did he tear his ACL, but this is his third time doing so.

Despite the team starting 1-2, through three games this season, Hill was having a pretty solid start to his senior campaign. He was 69 for 102 for 840 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. He also had a touchdown rushing. Still, it just goes to show that for some people if they didn’t have bad luck, they wouldn’t have luck at all.

Beer Money For Children

It’s both a humorous and heartwarming story, a College GameDay sign will lead to money being given to a children’s hospital. Carson King, a 24-year-old, went to the set of ESPN’s College GameDay and brought a sign that humorously said that he needed his Busch Light supply replenished and gave his Venmo account. He got a surprising number of donations.

In fact, he has received over $56,000 in donations, but rather than use it for beer, he is donating it to a children’s hospital. To add to the specialness of the surprising donation opportunity, Venmo and Anheuser Busch are matching King’s donation dollar for dollar. To make things even more worth it, they are throwing some beer in for King.
