Nevada Breaks Its Own Monthly Betting Handle Again In November

While there are plenty of other states clamoring to make sports betting part of their daily routine, the one that started it all appears to still be going stronger than ever.

Nevada, which previously owned the record of $596.8 million in March 2019, finally became the only state in the U.S. to eclipse the $600 million mark in the frame of a month. The $614.1 million wagered in Nevada through November 2019 is 2.9 percent higher than the previous record that was set.

While Nevada remains the Godfather of sports betting, the state of New Jersey continues to be there in the rearview mirror. The Garden State set its own record in November in 2019, with over $562 million in wagers placed. That beat its previous record of $488 million, which came the month before.

It was no surprise that football had the highest handle in Nevada during November. After all, it is the heart of football season.

America’s most popular sport accounted for 62.6 percent of Nevada’s total handle in November – or $384.6 million of the record-breaking month. Basketball came in second place, a very distant second place, with $166.6 million wagered.

This With No Mobile

It’s clear that mobile wagering has worked for the state of New Jersey, with 86.5 percent of all bets coming via that route. What makes Nevada’s record-setting month even more impressive is that not nearly as many of its residents and visitors use that method of wagering.

The reason being, it’s just not as easy for them to register in person (or worth the time for visitors) and go through all of the motions.

Considering the easiness that other states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania have to wager on mobile apps, Nevada has to be feeling good about its future in the sports betting world.

In reality, it shouldn’t be a competition between Nevada and other states, but it certainly has to feel good having the highest handle in a month for any U.S. state. At the end of the day, it should only matter to Nevada that its sports-betting business is booming.

If New York ever got mobile sports betting legalized, perhaps there would be a bigger reason for concern for states looking to have a competition in total handle generated. However, that day hasn’t come yet, and probably never will. Nevada – and New Jersey – is safe for the long haul in that regard.

With all of the numbers we’ve looked at and dissected, it’s clear that Nevada is home to all things betting out West. Droves of bettors coming from places like California, Arizona and Oregon can all make the pilgrimage for the weekend to put their hard-earned money down on sports and come back to get it the following weekend. America, what a beautiful country we live in.

Luckily for Nevada, football season is in full swing, and that’ll always keep the numbers on the upward swing. It’s worth noting, though, that the previous high set in The Silver State occurred during March Madness.

Needless to say, it’ll be interesting what happens in Nevada when that period of time rolls around in a few months.
