NFL News and Notes: Saints Make QB Moves

Even though the NFL Draft is in the rearview mirror, news has been plentiful in the NFL. Teams are seeing what their rosters look like after the draft and are aiming to either part ways with talent they don’t need or trying to fill the holes in their roster not addressed in the draft.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the news from around the league over the last week:

Saints Land Winston, Extend Hill

The New Orleans Saints’ quarterback room got both more talented and deeper this week. The Saints agreed to a one-year deal with Jameis Winston to come in as a backup to Drew Brees.

According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, the former Buccaneers’ quarterback had better offers elsewhere but liked the opportunity to play for the Saints, especially under the tutelage of Brees.

Last season for Tampa Bay, Winston went 380 for 626 (.607 completion percentage) for 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns. While the yardage and touchdowns are impressive, interceptions plagued the quarterback. Last year he had 30 interceptions in those 16 games, which helped contribute to a 7-9 record.

If he can get his interceptions under control, he could be a perfect complement to Brees, or even a possible replacement down the road.

Speaking of Saints quarterbacks, they have three notable quarterbacks as they also agreed to a two-year contract with Taysom Hill worth approximately $21 million ($16 million guaranteed). Hill has been a bit of a gadget-type player as he is athletic enough to be used as a receiver or running back. Last year, he rushed 27 times for 156 times and a touchdown while hauling in 19 receptions for 234 yards and six touchdowns.

Bengals Part Ways With Dalton

Speaking of quarterbacks, it was an end of an era in Cincinnati as the Bengals are releasing quarterback Andy Dalton. With the acquisition of Joe Burrow with the first overall pick in the draft, Dalton was expendable.

Last year, Dalton was just 2-11 in 13 games. In that time, he had 3,494 yards, 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He will join the likes of Cam Newton on the unemployment line, but it would not be surprising to see him picked up by a team looking for a stopgap quarterback or at least competition in the quarterback room.

Jaguars Decline Fifth-Year Option On Fournette

It appears that the Jacksonville Jaguars do not have running back Leonard Fournette in their future plans. First, it was reported that he was on the trade block ahead of the draft, and now the Jaguars have declined their fifth-year option on the running back.

By declining the option, the Jaguars are avoiding having to pay the running back over $8 million in 2021. Instead, 2020 will be the last year of his contract with the Jaguars, and it will pay him just over $4 million.

Fournette is no slouch, either. Last year, he rushed 265 times for 1,152 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 76 receptions for another 522 yards. In fact, he eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark two out of his three years in the league, but it appears that the Jaguars still intend to move on after the upcoming season.
