NFL News: Mahomes, Quarterback Movement, and Coaching Vacancies

With only four teams left in the postseason, excitement is building as the Super Bowl is just around the corner. Whether looking at players preparing for games or players walking away, there has been plenty of news throughout the league this week. Let’s take a look at some of the bigger stories.

Chiefs Hoping To Get Star Quarterback Back

Ever since getting knocked out of last week’s game against the Cleveland Browns, all eyes have been on the Kansas City Chiefs’ injury reports this week to see if star quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be available to play this weekend against the Bills.

On Thursday, the injury report issued from the Chiefs stated Mahomes as limited, but head coach Andy Reid indicated that Mahomes took most of the snaps at quarterback. While a final decision will be made over the weekend, things appear to be heading towards Mahomes being able to play on Sunday.

Before suffering his concussion last weekend, Mahomes had thrown for 255 yards and a touchdown while rushing for another.

Currently, the Chiefs are slight favorites for the AFC championship. They are -166 to win while the Bills’ moneyline sits at +140. The spread features the Bills +3.

Philip Rivers To Retire

With Drew Brees already announcing his retirement and Ben Roethlisberger mulling it over, it appears that an end of an era with NFL quarterbacks is upon us. This was even further solidified this week when Philip Rivers announced that he would be walking away from the game.

After 16 seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, Rivers was solid in his only season with the Indianapolis Colts. In a season where the Colts finished 11-5 and made the playoffs, Rivers threw for 4,169 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

Despite a solid season, Rivers is walking away at 39 years old. Since breaking into the league in 2004, Rivers has thrown for a total of 63,440 yards and 421 yards.

Unfortunately, he is one of the best quarterbacks to never play in a Super Bowl, but his career may ultimately find him in the Hall-of-Fame when it is all said and done nonetheless.

Dwayne Haskins Signs With Pittsburgh

After being cut by the Washington Football Team and left unclaimed in waivers, it did not take long for quarterback Dwayne Haskins to get off the unemployment line and back with a team.

On Thursday, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed him to a reserve/future contract. At this point, there has been some speculation that Ben Roethlisberger is considering retirement, but even if he doesn’t, the 23-year-old could be a reclamation project for head coach Mike Tomlin.

This season, with Washington, Haskins threw for 1,439 yards, five touchdowns, and seven interceptions over the course of seven games. He also rushed for 46 yards and another score.

While a path to playing time isn’t clear for Haskins at this point, it could be an opportunity for a change of scenery and a reboot to what has started out as a disappointing career.

Head Coaching Vacancies Filling Up Fast

At the conclusion of the season, there were various head coaching vacancies as teams decided to move in different directions. As of this week, all but one of those vacancies had been filled. Here is a list of the hires to this point:

  • Jacksonville Jaguars hired Urban Meyer
  • New York Jets hire Robert Saleh
  • Atlanta Falcons hire Arthur Smith
  • Los Angeles Chargers hire Brandon Staley
  • Detroit Lions hire Dan Campbell
  • Philadelphia Eagles hire Nick Sirianni

The only vacancy that has not been filled is the Houston Texans’ head coaching position, although they did fill their general manager vacancy by hiring Nick Caserio.
