PGA: 3M Open Goes Into The Weekend

The PGA is in Blaine, Minn., this weekend at TPC Twin Cities, which is playing host to the 3M Open. A weekend coming off the Memorial in Ohio, not as many big names are in this tournament. It is not quite the list of top guys that fans got to see play at Muirfield Village.

One of the most popular players this weekend is Brooks Koepka, but he continues to struggle. He finished one under par after Friday’s round, missing the cut by one stroke. He desperately needs to put a full round together soon, if he wants to get back where he was.

The defending champion of the 3M Open is Matthew Wolff, who will enter the weekend in a good spot. He posted a -6 on Thursday and followed that with a -3 round on Friday. That put him just three shots off the lead going into Saturday.

Michael Thompson and Richy Werenski are tied for the top spot heading into Saturday’s third round at -12.

Tony Finau is coming off a good performance last weekend at the Memorial and has kept some of that momentum, sitting one shot off the lead along with Talor Gooch entering the weekend.

Dustin Johnson

Taking a look at the players in the tournament, one might think it would be an opportunity for Dustin Johnson to run away with it. Playing his best, he is one of the best golfers in the field.

However, he had a disappointing first day and ended up withdrawing from the tournament. Much of this had to do with a back injury he suffered during his opening round.

“It was going OK until I hit it … well, I just hit a poor shot on 17,” he said after the round and before his withdrawal was announced. “I hit it a little heavy in the water, made 5 there.

“But then hit a great drive on 18 and we only had like 199 (yards) to cover from where I was, 208 flag. It was a perfect 6-iron. Hit it right at it, and never once did I think it was going to go in the water.”

He was even headed to the Par 3 17th, then it fell apart. He double-bogeyed that hole and ended up with a 9 on the Par 5 18th.

“Yeah, it’s just my iron play,” he said. “I feel like I’m driving it well, but the iron play, first six or seven holes hit it close, and then the rest of the day kind of struggled a little bit with iron play.”

WGC Fed-Ex St. Jude Invitational

The field next week will have a bit of a different look to it. It will include 45 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings. That will be the most of any event so far this season.

It will be the first start for Jon Rahm at the top spot in the world. Missing from the tournament will be Tiger Woods, who fans might not see again until the next major.
